About The Position

Under general supervision, performs nursing duties within the scope of the Vocational Nursing Practice Act; cares for patients in a hospital inpatient setting, outpatient clinic of a hospital, or mental health clinic; and performs other related duties as required. The Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) is the fully qualified working level and is distinguished from the class of Nurse Assistant in that the LVN requires a state license and provides a broader range of skilled nursing care.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of an accredited Vocational Nurse Program.
  • Possession of a valid California Vocational Nurse’s License issued by the California Board of Vocational Nurse and Psychiatric Technician Examiners.
  • Intravenous Therapy (I.V.) certification.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through AHA.
  • Knowledge of current principles, techniques, and procedures used in vocational nursing as covered in the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, acute care procedures and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the use and effects of appropriate documentation of medicine and narcotics.
  • Knowledge of medication administration and any policies and procedures of the setting assigned; quality assurance program and patient safety program, infection control.

Responsibilities

  • Performs nursing duties within the scope of the Vocational Nursing Practice Act.
  • Cares for patients in a hospital inpatient setting, outpatient clinic of a hospital, or mental health clinic.
  • Manages emergency or crisis situations; requires judgement/action which could result in undesirable patient outcome.
  • Performs the full range of vocational nursing duties and responsibilities per Vocational Nursing Practice Act.
  • Follows policies and procedures for the setting assigned.
  • Works under stressful situations and in emergency situations.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with physicians, registered nurses, patients, and co-workers and all internal and external customers.
  • Completes and maintains reports and patient records.
  • Makes observations of situations accurately and reports them so effective action can be taken according to rules of documentation and policies and procedures.
  • Maintains, demonstrates and is assessed on the knowledge and skills necessary to provide for physical, psychosocial and cultural needs appropriate to the age of the patients serviced on his/her assigned unit.
