About The Position

The MFA is delighted to continue the internship supported by the Lunder Foundation. This is a needs-based paid internship offered to an outstanding student who is a resident of or enrolled in a college in the state of Maine. The criteria to apply for this internship are: Maine resident or enrolled in Maine college Currently enrolled undergraduate  Proof of Federal Student Aid eligibility required  The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Learning Department is responsible for programs that give visitors of all ages opportunities to make direct connections with the Museum’s collection and exhibitions. The Department offers internships to college students who enjoy working with people and are interested in learning more about the many facets of Museum Education. The Lunder Studio Art Intern joins a team of other Studio Art Interns who fulfill the important role as Teaching Assistants (TA’s) to assist with the Summer Studio Art Class program at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. These are week-long, theme-based Studio Art Classes offered to children (ages 5-11) and teens (ages 12-17) that take place on-site in the Museum’s galleries and studios. All Studio Art Interns assist with these classes by helping students to understand a range of art concepts, experiment with art materials, and explore the galleries. Interns are expected to design and teach their own lessons, develop classroom activities, and/or implement a gallery visit using the method of Visual Thinking Strategies. This is a valuable opportunity for those interested in working with a wide range of age groups, to explore teaching in a museum setting, as well as gain pre-practicum experience when applying to graduate teaching programs. While interns will work closely with Studio Art Instructors for mentorship, primary supervision will be provided by the Senior Manager of Studio Art Classes. Ideal candidates must be able to commit to work onsite 35 hours weekly from 8:15 am - 4:15 pm, Monday-Friday between June 22 - August 21, 2026. (Interns receive one week off on a predetermined schedule.)   Additionally, interns must attend orientations on Monday June 15, Tuesday June 16 and Wednesday June 17, and join in the Museum Pathways and Practices professional development course from 12:30-2:30pm on the following Thursdays: June 18, June 25, July 2, July 9, July 16, July 23, July 30, August 6, August 13, and August 20. The selected intern will be paid at a rate of $ 16.80 per hour. Each intern will receive a $90 per month transportation subsidy, and a one-time $1,500 housing subsidy paid in two equal installments. (These subsidies are subject to taxes.) Requirements

  • Must provide proof of Maine residency/enrollment and financial aid eligibility via copy of page one of FAFSA form (Please redact any information indicating your amount of financial aid)
  • Current enrollment in and returning to an undergraduate program in studio art, childhood/elementary education, art education, liberal arts, arts administration, art history, or museum studies.
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team as well as independently.
  • Previous experience of interacting easily and successfully working with children and/or teens aged 5-17 years old.
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and take initiative.
  • Must be able to use stairs.

  • Ability to attend orientation on Monday, June 15, 2026, 10am to 3:30pm. 

Responsibilities

  • Work alongside a range of teaching styles of experienced and professional art educators who will provide mentorship and guidance.
  • Gain valuable skills in customer service by communicating with a variety of audiences, visitors, and students.
  • Understand the different stages of child development and use of age-appropriate art materials by working directly with students ages 5 – 17. 
  • Foster a safe learning environment through community and relationship building and learn conflict resolution skills.
  • Develop strong facilitation skills, research, and preparation to implement art inquiry discussions in the galleries with Visual Thinking Strategies
  • Review the process of curriculum development and effective lesson planning with differentiated instruction and scaffolding to meet diverse needs for students with or without accommodations.
  • Develop reflective practice habits to set and achieve goals.
  • Network with museum professionals during Museum Pathways and Practices professional development sessions to gain more exposure to the field.
  • Support the instructors with classroom management and art lessons, both in the classroom and galleries
  • Maintain the organization and inventory of the supply room.
  • Help instructors prepare project materials for classes and clean up.
  • Assist parents/accompanying adults and students.
  • Supervise students during drop-off, pick-up, and lunch periods.
  • Escort students to classrooms and various locations.
  • Lead enrichment activities as needed.
