About The Position

The Grader is accountable for sorting and grading incoming lumber according to SmartLam production needs and standards. He/she works with a team to maintain lumber flow, communication and coordination with the Lead Grader, and the Finger-Joint Operators to ensure sufficient lumber has been graded and made available to support scheduled production. The Grader also supports routine inventory counts, as directed by the Plant Manager. This is a physically demanding position requiring the ability to be on one’s feet for an entire shift and repeatedly lift 50 pounds. Forklift Operator experience desired.

Requirements

  • Proficient with basic math skills.
  • Proficient with use of tape measures and other basic tools.
  • Ability to accurately identify and differentiate between lumber species and grades.
  • Capable of lifting, pulling, and pushing at least 50 pounds and being on feet for an entire shift.
  • Communicates and works well with others and maintains a positive attitude.
  • Capable of operating effectively during periods of high stress with aggressive deadlines.
  • Self-motivated and capable of operating with minimal supervision.
  • Reliable individual with an excellent time and attendance record.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience as a lumber grader preferred.
  • Forklift Operator experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Follows Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and guidelines for grading lumber to meet SmartLam product guidelines and APA PRG-320 standards.
  • Measures moisture content with handheld or automated meters and systems.
  • Monitors for unacceptable levels of pitch, wane, cook, bow, knots and other wood defects.
  • Accurately identifies appropriate “bin” (or grade) based on above criteria.
  • Supports accurate recording of lumber grading results needed for inventory management.
  • Fills out paperwork and/or enters information directly into Zoho.
  • Collaborates with team members to safely and efficiently process large volumes of lumber.
  • Participates in periodic inventory counts as requested by Plant Manager.
  • Stickers and restacks wet lumber in need of drying.
  • Creates legible labels and retags lumber bundles when needed.
  • Suggests opportunities for process improvement to support increased grading throughput.
  • Uses proper ergonomics to perform general physical activities to lift and stack lumber.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by management.
  • Maintains a safe and clean workspace.
