An LPN performs a variety of direct and indirect patient care under the direction of a registered nurse. Some of the skills performed include working with an RN and sharing responsibility for a team of patients, administration of IV fluids and medications (certain IV medications after successful completion of certification class), venipuncture for blood collection, insertion of IV cannulas, physical assessment and collecting of information, fingerstick & heelstick blood sugars, directing staff in patient care, insertion of foley catheters, dressing wounds and skin care, quick cult, providing newborn care, and providing post-partum, pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative care.
