About The Position

The incumbent should be highly experienced and knowledgeable in the field of medical specialty requirements and perform highly complex functions under the general supervision of a licensed medical practitioner or health professional. Incumbents will receive written or oral instructions as to priorities, scheduling, or technical requirements and are expected to carry out assignments under general supervision, consulting with the licensed medical practitioner or health professional. Incumbents should possess cultural competence in providing care to LGBTQ+ patients and people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). Demonstrated working knowledge of many procedures under a variety of work conditions, including strict deadlines or emergencies. This is a part-time position for 20 hours/week.

Requirements

  • Associate degree (foreign equivalent or higher) and four (4) years of full-time experience working in a healthcare setting or a bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) and two (2) years of full-time experience in a healthcare setting may be considered.
  • Active/Full Licensed (or active/full licensed by 8/31/2026) Practical Nurse in New York State.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with Cerner EMR.
  • Experience working with Microsoft office suite.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish.

Responsibilities

  • Assess patients' medical history, current symptoms, and potential risk factors for STIs.
  • Collect samples (e.g., blood, urine, swabs) for STI testing and ensure that these samples are properly labeled and sent to the lab for analysis.
  • Administer medications, including intramuscular antibiotics.
  • Communicate with patients about results of testing.
  • Educate patients about their specific STI diagnosis, transmission, and prevention.
  • Document patient information, test results and treatments properly.
  • Work closely with other healthcare professionals, such as physicians, nurse practitioners, and case managers, to ensure a coordinated approach to patient care.
  • Be culturally sensitive and nonjudgmental when working with a diverse population, as this fosters open communication and trust.
  • Work for prior authorization of drugs with insurance if needed.
  • Submit invoices to SBU Wolfmart system for payments.
  • Schedule appointments for patients.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
