The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides direct patient care to postpartum mothers and newborns under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN), physician, certified nurse midwife, or other licensed independent practitioner in accordance with the Oregon State Board of Nursing Nurse Practice Act. The LPN delivers safe, compassionate, family-centered nursing care to postpartum patients and newborns while assisting with patient education, medication administration, monitoring, documentation, and coordination of care within the LPN scope of practice. Following successful completion of facility-approved education, competency validation, and ongoing competency assessment, the LPN also functions as a Surgical Scrub Technician during cesarean deliveries and other obstetrical surgical procedures. The LPN is responsible for maintaining sterile technique, preparing surgical instrumentation, assisting the surgical team, and performing surgical counts in collaboration with the circulating Registered Nurse. The LPN practices within Oregon licensure requirements and performs only those duties authorized by state law, hospital policy, demonstrated competency, and provider delegation.
