About The Position

The LPN School Nurse will gather data on patient's physical and emotional needs and provide prioritized school nursing care according to patient age, symptoms, and psychological needs. This role involves monitoring the health needs of students and faculty, performing simple procedures, and recognizing and referring complex problems to a Registered Nurse. The nurse will also serve as a liaison between the school, home, community, and other healthcare entities, assist in the implementation and planning of school health policies, and act as a resource for health curriculum planning. Collaboration with school administration, faculty, staff, and the local health department is key to planning and organizing the school health program and maintaining current health programs. The position requires implementing all screening programs mandated by Indiana law, maintaining school health records, and providing appropriate services to meet department needs. This includes effective communication, accurate documentation, and maintaining nursing equipment. The nurse will independently perform quality control, document results, investigate and resolve issues, and participate in Quality Improvement/Quality Assurance programs. They will also evaluate current practices, make suggestions for improvement, assist in evaluating new procedures and equipment, and monitor supply purchasing and inventory control. Technical guidance for customers regarding school nursing procedures and operations will be provided. Attendance at designated meetings and participation in professional activities and continuing education are expected. The role requires conducting all activities in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, standards, and Johnson Memorial Health policies and procedures, including Blood and Body Substance Precautions. The nurse will clearly communicate and continuously support the Mission and Values of Johnson Memorial Health.

Requirements

  • Current Indiana LPN License required.
  • Current CPR certification required.

  • One year nursing experience in school setting preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Gathers data on patient's physical and emotional needs and provides prioritized school nursing care according to patient age, symptoms, and psychological needs under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
  • Monitors the health needs of the students and faculty and consults with Registered Nurse as needed.
  • Monitors patients systematically to identify progress and trends that require interventions.
  • Performs simple procedures and recognizes and refers complex problems to Registered Nurse.
  • Implements and documents timely interventions that are appropriate for patient needs within scope of licensure.
  • Evaluates patient care through planning, intervention, re-evaluation, written documentation, observation and comparison to established standards.
  • Serves as a liaison between school, home, the community and other healthcare entities.
  • Assists in the implementation and planning of school health policies and acts as a resource in matters pertaining to health curriculum planning.
  • Collaborates with school administration, faculty and staff and the local health department in planning and organizing the school health program; maintaining current mandated and non-mandated health programs.
  • Implements all screening programs mandated by Indiana law and maintains all necessary school health records.
  • Provides appropriate services to meet the needs of the department's customers as requested including but not limited to effective and consistent communication and the documentation of accurate and timely information.
  • Maintains nursing equipment and area, including scheduled, preventative maintenance, according to necessary guidelines.
  • Independently performs quality control/customer satisfaction procedures, documents results, and investigates and resolves issues, with appropriate supervisory notification of activity.
  • Participates in Quality Improvement/Quality Assurance programs at Johnson Memorial Health (JMH).
  • Evaluates current practices and makes appropriate suggestions to improve productivity and enhance expense reduction; assists in the evaluation of new procedures and equipment; monitors the purchasing of supplies and inventory control.
  • Provides technical guidance for customers as it relates to school nursing procedures and operations.
  • Attends meetings inside and outside of the school and JMH as designated.
  • Participates in professional activities and continuing education to maintain professional expertise.
  • Performs other duties as required.
