This position provides patient care to clients with serious and persistent mental illness in a community mental health center.

Requirements

  • Current license as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the State of Tennessee or Licensed Vocational Nurse.
  • Previous experience in the practice of psychiatric nursing desired.
  • Providing direct patient care in a community mental health center or other psychiatric setting, the LPN/LVN must be able to respond to patients’ needs that may include lifting of patients and the use of physical strength to avoid combative patients.
  • There is need for precautions for exposure to blood and other body fluids.
  • Emotional stability and empathy sufficient to work with emotionally unstable patients is necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates ability to apply Infection Control Policies.
  • Demonstrates ability to carry out own role in Clinic emergency plan implementation.
  • Demonstrates ability to apply patients’ rights policies.
  • Demonstrates ability to apply hazardous materials management policies.
  • Demonstrates understanding of patient and proprietary information confidentiality policies.
  • Demonstrates proper medication administration; nursing and pharmacy policies and procedures relative to drug storage, mixing with fluids, automatic stop dates, etc.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform nursing patient care assignments including but not limited to Medication education
  • Implementation of procedures to identify and de-escalate crisis, including the use of verbal de-escalation techniques.
  • Demonstrates effective communication of patients’ needs.
  • Demonstrates ability to effectively collaborate with other nursing staff to recommend departmental policies and procedures and assures data collection supporting demonstration of providing cost-effective, quality nursing care (QA performance standard).
  • Demonstrates ability to effectively conduct peer review activities (QA performance standard)
  • Demonstrates ability to effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary groups of care providers in evaluation of treatment effectiveness for populations served (CQI performance standard) as directed by the Clinical Leader.
  • Demonstrates ability to positively influence other staff’s morale.
  • Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards. Completes required education assignments annually. Works toward achieving goals and objectives, and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
