About The Position

Provides practical nursing support in a physician practice or clinic setting under the direction of a physician or mid-level practitioner, following applicable federal, state, local, Carilion Clinic, and departmental policies and standards. Provides nursing care for patients of all ages and applies knowledge of growth and development to the patients served. The role includes assessing patients, preparing them for provider evaluation, administering medications and injections as directed, documenting in electronic medical records, teaching patients, assisting with referrals and authorizations, and supporting laboratory procedures. Depending on the practice, duties may also include onsite testing and x-ray procedures. The employee maintains a clean and safe work area, follows specimen and contaminated-waste handling precautions, supports performance improvement activities, and performs other trained tasks related to practice operations.

Requirements

Graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing, or be a new graduate of an approved program eligible to sit for the Virginia licensure exam.
Current Virginia Practical Nurse (LPN) license required.
Current AHA BLS-HCP certification required.
Customer-driven approach, positive demeanor, good verbal and written communication skills, and professional appearance and approach.
Ability to problem-solve and communicate effectively with a wide variety of people.
Ability to use automated computer systems, including electronic medical records; keyboarding skills required.

Nice To Haves

One year of experience in a physician office.
Limited Radiologic Technician licensure if performing radiology.

Responsibilities

Assess patients by obtaining height, weight, vital signs, chief complaint, current medications, and other relevant information.
Prepare patients for provider evaluation by obtaining specimens, positioning them for exams, listing medications, and assisting with exams and diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
Coordinate tele-retinal and tele-dermatology clinic setup.
Administer medications and injections as directed by the provider.
Maintain clean and safe work, exam, treatment, x-ray, and lab areas; restock supplies and instruments and sterilize reusable equipment as needed.
Document and maintain patient information in the electronic medical record promptly, including treatment procedures, medication refills, test results, and patient concerns.
Contribute to Carilion Clinic performance improvement activities.
Provide patient teaching as directed, including lab results, diet and medication instructions, appropriate follow-up, and reinforcement of provider instructions.
Assist with specialist referral authorizations and pre-authorizations for testing and ancillary services.
Assist with laboratory procedures, including collecting urine specimens, preparing blood samples for reference labs, and accurately labeling specimens with patient identification.
Follow safety precautions and standards, including proper disposal of specimens and contaminated waste.
When applicable, perform laboratory procedures as directed, such as phlebotomy, peripheral sticks, collecting and preparing urine specimens, throat smears, and onsite waived or moderate-complexity testing after appropriate training.
Prepare laboratory equipment, run daily quality-control tests, perform proficiency and control testing and equipment calibration, and maintain the quality assurance plan.
When applicable, perform provider-directed x-ray procedures, prevent excessive exposure to patients and self, and complete x-ray documentation and labeling.
Perform other trained tasks relating to practice operations as assigned or requested.
