The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides professional nursing care for residents of all ages in long term care, under the supervision of a registered nurse, advanced practice provider, or physician. This role demonstrates knowledge of nursing principles for the resident in the relevant clinical setting, practicing within the full scope of nursing expertise and utilizing appropriate age and population specific standards. The LPN possesses the ability to perform testing to evaluate data reflective of the resident's status and to provide the care needed, as well as recognize problems, recommend solutions, and respond effectively in emergent situations. Key functions include ensuring the health, comfort, and safety of residents, contributing to resident assessments, administering medications and treatments as ordered, and providing technical support to healthcare professionals. The role also involves documenting resident interactions and outcomes, establishing effective working relationships, and collaborating as a member of an interdisciplinary care team. Additionally, the LPN counsels residents and families on prevention and treatment plans and develops self-care programs through resident education principles.
