About The Position

The LPN IV- Pre Anesthesia is responsible for starting IVs on pre-procedure patients. This role involves providing nursing care, administering medications, and documenting care in the patient's medical record under the direction of a medical provider. The position operates under the general clinical supervision of a medical provider and administrative supervision of the Practice Manager. The employee is responsible for providing nursing care on the assigned shift, utilizing the nursing process and addressing age-specific needs. The role may require the employee to be on call and work overtime as needed by the hospital.

Requirements

  • Completion of a vocational school LPN program.
  • Completion of a formal (school or agency) intravenous therapy-training program.
  • Current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse as approved by the Tennessee Board of Nursing for practice in the state of Tennessee.
  • BLS certification must be obtained within the orientation period, and certification must be kept current while in this position.
  • Proficiency in pharmacology and documentation.
  • Ability to demonstrate nursing skills according to current hospital and nursing policies and procedures.
  • Minimum of 6 months experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • Must have attended a formal IV push medication training program prior to administering IV push medications.
  • Basic computer skills preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs specified patient care with a high degree of skill, minimal discomfort to the patient, and minimal supervision.
  • Checks schedules, organizes patient flow, and accompanies patients to exam/procedure rooms.
  • Assists patients with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, and preparing exam rooms/setting up instruments.
  • Collects patient history and performs screenings/lab tests per Medical Provider’s orders.
  • Assists Medical Provider/other nursing staff with various procedures.
  • Charts patient information and relays instructions to patients/family.
  • Answers telephone calls and provides pertinent information.
  • Administers medications and treatments within scope of practice.
  • Prepares for surgery and assists providers with procedures and examinations according to policy.
  • Initiates peripheral IV access and administers IV flushes and IVPBs according to policy.
  • Ensures the proper segregation and safe disposal of hazardous pharmaceutical waste.
  • Receives and transcribes physician, FNP, PA orders as appropriate.
  • Contributes to the development, implementation, and continuing evaluation of the patient care plan.
  • Identifies, records, and reports any change in patient condition or adverse reaction to treatment and/or medication to the medical provider.
  • Documents care in patient’s record.
  • Performs environmental duties including cleaning exam/procedure room instruments and equipment, sterilizing equipment/instruments, keeping records, ordering, sorting, storing supplies, and restocking exam/procedure rooms.
  • Respects and promotes patient rights; follows all Clinic Policies and Procedures and System wide policies.
  • Responds to medical emergencies, initiates CPR or appropriate action, and notifies appropriate personnel.
  • Orders patient supplies and completes referrals for patients.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.
  • Contributes to a positive work environment and the overall team effort of the clinic.
  • Performs preceptor duties to new employees to provide needed guidance during orientation.
