Private Duty Nursing duties may include administering medical treatments as ordered by the physician, vent cares, suctioning, G-Tube cares, exercise program, and providing personal cares. Home care nurses have the unique opportunity to build meaningful relationships and deliver focused care tailored to a single client’s needs in the comfort of their home. The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) participates in the implementation and evaluation of patient/resident care for stable and predictable patients/residents of all ages in the home care setting. The role requires demonstrating knowledge of nursing principles, the ability to perform testing to assess patient status, interpret information, and provide age-specific care. Competency within the full scope of nursing expertise and knowledge, utilizing appropriate age and population-specific standards in the home care setting is essential. The LPN ensures the health, comfort, and safety of patients/residents, possesses knowledge of medications and their effects, patient/resident education principles, common safety hazards, and precautions specific to the home setting. Skills include administering treatments and medications, documenting and maintaining records, and establishing effective working relationships. The ability to recognize problems, recommend solutions, interpret guidelines, communicate clearly, and maintain confidentiality is also required. The LPN will counsel patients/residents and family members, under the direction of a registered nurse, on prevention and treatment plans.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited practical nursing program as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • If position requires IV therapy/management skills, the following is required in North Dakota: graduation from a Board approved AASPN program where IV therapy is part of the curriculum or completion of an IV Therapy course approved by the North Dakota Board of Nursing.
  • Currently holds an unencu mbered Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license with State Nursing board and/or possess multi-state licensure privileges.
  • Obtains and subsequently maintains required department specific competencies and certifications.
  • Knowledge of nursing principles for the patient/resident in the relevant setting.
  • Ability to perform testing to assess data reflective of the patient's/resident's status and to interpret appropriately the information needed to identify each patient's/resident's requirements relative to the age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed.
  • Competency and practice within the full scope of nursing expertise/knowledge and utilizes appropriate age and population specific standards as designated in the home care setting.
  • Knowledge of the principles and skills needed for nursing to provide patient/resident care and treatment.
  • Knowledge of medications and their effects on patients/residents.
  • Knowledge of patient/resident education principles to develop a self-care program.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe environment, specific to the home setting.
  • Skill in administering a variety of treatments and medications as directed.
  • Skill in documenting and maintaining records.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients/residents, health care providers, and the public.
  • Ability to recognize problems and recommend solutions.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt, and follow guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Administering physician-ordered treatments and medications
  • Providing respiratory support, including ventilator care and suctioning
  • G-tube feeding and care
  • Assisting with personal care and daily living activities
  • Supporting individualized therapy and exercise programs
  • Taking clients to school
