The position is in the SPW Green End department and reports to the Green End Supervisor. Work includes cleaning sawdust, chips, veneer, and bark; clearing jams in conveyor systems and chippers; operating the chipping system; emptying waste boxes into dumpsters; maintaining catch basins; and helping with blowdown as directed. The associate reports broken machinery and oil leaks promptly and may assist coworkers or maintenance personnel with basic machine upkeep. Rotation to other positions may be required for cross-training or production needs. The role is performed inside about 95% of the time and outside about 5%. Temperatures can range from 10°F to 105°F, with an average of 60°F. The work environment includes machine noise and nearby loaders, water mist, and dry-wood odors. Required protective equipment includes eye and hearing protection, approved footwear, gloves, and high-visibility clothing when entering or exiting the mill or working on the floor. The work requires prolonged standing and walking, continuous use of vision and hearing, frequent pushing, pulling, reaching, and use of the arms, wrists, and hands, and occasional lifting or carrying over 35 pounds. The maximum weight lifted without assistance is 50 pounds; lifting heavier loads requires two or more people and/or lifting devices. The role may involve crawling under machinery, climbing ladders, bending, twisting, squatting, kneeling, and working around moving machinery. Employees must follow the 14-step lockout/tagout procedure before maintenance, jam clearing, or entering machinery, and perform only maintenance for which they are trained.
