About The Position

The Head-Royce Lower School is seeking a dynamic, creative educator to join our first grade team for a period of time to cover family leave. Our homeroom teachers have a contained classroom of approximately 20 students and deliver content and skills in language arts, social studies, science and math. In addition, teachers use the Responsive Classroom approach, Toolbox and our school’s mission to support social-emotional and character growth. Our faculty create classrooms that encourage students to participate in experiential learning, take risks, view the world through multiple lenses, utilize innovative tools, and demonstrate proficiencies through a range of assessments that include real world problems and performances. Beyond the classroom, teachers are expected to take on Lower-School-wide duties and participate in the life of the community.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum 3 years experience teaching at the primary elementary level
  • Strong academic background, experience in equity and inclusion education and an awareness of ecological literacy
  • Genuine fondness for working with students of this age
  • Collaborative, collegial, and flexible teacher within the Lower School with other student-focused educators
  • Clear communicator with students, colleagues and parents/guardians, both orally and in writing
  • Demonstrates knowledge of a child’s physical, social and emotional development
  • Possesses a growth mindset, a love of learning, and patience
  • Uses technology to enhance the student experience
  • Practices in differentiated instruction
  • Strong organizational, planning, and classroom management skills
  • Open to all applicants authorized to work in the U.S and willing to undergo both Livescan background check and TB screening as part of the hiring process.
  • Employment is also contingent upon successful completion of background checks and compliance with California SB 848, which requires prior educational institution employers to disclose credible complaints, substantiated investigations, or discipline involving egregious misconduct.

Responsibilities

  • Teach content and skills for a contained classroom of about 20 students, in Language Arts, Social Studies, Science and Math.
  • Differentiate instruction in these subject areas to meet students where they are.
  • Setup and maintain an engaging classroom that draws students and creates an environment that feels safe to all learners and promotes authentic learning.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents and professional community.
  • Foster communication with teachers in order to effectively discuss and support student needs in/out of the classroom, ultimately developing the whole child.
  • Deliver a student-centered curriculum with opportunities for choice, real-world problem solving, creativity and intellectual engagement.
  • Plan and conduct field trips for Primary Elementary students.
  • Help develop student opportunities for authentic engagement in their community.
  • Help students develop self-awareness and healthy decision-making.
  • Supervise LS before-school, recess and dismissals, as assigned by the LS Head.
  • Work with LS Head and Specialist faculty to ensure a coordinated and well-rounded experience for all students.
  • Attend events (Open House, All School Fair etc.) that support the wellbeing of our students.
  • Actively participate in the life of the community (sporting events, performances, committees).
  • Attend full community, divisional, and departmental meetings.
