About The Position

Substitute teaching in one of the Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic Elementary and Middle Schools is a rewarding experience for anyone who believes in the power of education and the strength of faith. As one of the largest private school systems in the nation with approximately 148 schools across Cook and Lake Counties, we are not just committed to our students’ success, but also your professional and spiritual success. The substitute teacher will monitor students and their learning in the absence of the regularly scheduled teacher. The substitute will maintain a positive learning environment in the classroom while facilitating lesson plans left by the regularly scheduled teacher. A successful candidate will be one who is able to follow direction, hold students accountable, and is enthusiastic about education and learning. The long-term substitute steps in when a regular teacher is out for several weeks or months, such as for maternity leave or medical recovery. This person does not just supervise the room. They act as the full teacher of record to keep student learning on track.

Requirements

State License: Valid teaching license or substitute teaching permit required by the state or district.
Education: Bachelor’s degree preferred or required depending on the grade level and subject.
Skills: Strong knowledge of the subject, patience, and good management skills.

Responsibilities

Lesson Planning: Create or follow long-term pacing guides and daily lesson plans that match school rules.
Instruction: Teach lessons in the required subjects and help all students learn.
Classroom Management: Set good behavior rules and keep a safe, happy place to learn.
Grading & Assessment: Give tests and quizzes, grade work, and record progress.
Communication: Talk to parents, update staff, and go to school meetings.
