About The Position

High Tech High Mesa is seeking a Long-Term Substitute Teacher for Humanities. This role reports to the School Director and is a full-time, temporary, non-exempt position starting August 7, 2026. The teacher will be responsible for preparing lesson plans, educating students, assigning homework, grading tests, and documenting progress. The ideal candidate will command the classroom and engage students with a project-based curriculum, creating and maintaining a learning environment that guides students to fulfill their academic potential and accomplish learning goals. High Tech High is a network of K-12 charter schools in San Diego County, guided by principles of equity, personalization, authentic work, and collaborative design.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • A valid California K-12 teaching credential. This may include a 30-day Substitute Permit or a Teaching Permit for Statutory Leave (TPSL).
  • Ability to efficiently and effectively manage the time of self and others.
  • Ability to work with professionalism, discretion, sound judgment, equity, honesty and personal accountability at all times.
  • Possesses strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Exceptional administrative and organization skills.
  • Proficient knowledge of teaching strategies and methods.
  • Ability to incorporate goals, competencies and objectives into lesson plans in ways that directly apply to student’s lives.
  • Critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to manage diversity.

Responsibilities

  • Embody High Tech High’s design principles of Equity, Personalization, Authentic Work and Collaborative Design in all work activities and actions.
  • Create daily lesson plans with project-based assignments that are engaging, educational and exciting for the kids.
  • Plan, prepare and deliver instructional activities that facilitate active learning experiences.
  • Incorporate goals, competencies and objectives into lesson plans in ways that directly apply to the student’s life.
  • Achieve school and course-wide performance goals for every student in class.
  • Grade assignments and homework regularly to keep students updated on how they are doing.
  • Identify students who are struggling with learning, emotional problems, or situations at home, and find them the resources they need.

Benefits

  • If 12 weeks or more, then benefits and a pro-rated salary to commensurate with the shorter contract period.
  • If under 12 weeks, then hourly no benefits.
