About The Position

Kokua Education is hiring substitute teachers for the 2026–27 school year to work in schools across the Washington, D.C. area. The role is described as a long-term middle school math substitute position, with assignments available across K–12 schools. Substitute teachers help keep classrooms running, support students’ learning, and serve as positive role models. Assignments may also involve lunch or recess supervision, hallway monitoring, tutoring, and proctoring during testing season. Teachers can choose assignments and work up to five days per week, with preference given to candidates willing to accept morning-of assignments. The interview process can begin immediately, and the company says applicants may receive an offer within one week. Kokua provides support from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily and free professional development.

Requirements

• At least one year of experience working with children in any setting, such as a classroom, tutoring, or coaching.
• An associate degree or at least 60 credit hours.
• Confidence managing a classroom of students.
• Ability to pass state and federal background checks; costs are reimbursed after 10 assignments.
• Belief that every child has a unique and powerful gift to share with the world.

Nice To Haves

• Experience working in a special education setting is preferred.
• Willingness to accept morning-of assignments is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Teach or cover classroom assignments, including long-term middle school math positions.
• Support students’ learning and act as a positive role model.
• Manage a classroom of students.
• Step in for other school duties as needed, including lunch and recess supervision, hallway monitoring, tutoring, and proctoring during testing season.
