Long Range Rock Engineer

Sibanye Stillwater•Columbus, MT

About The Position

At Sibanye-Stillwater, the Long Range Rock Engineer provides strategic geotechnical and rock engineering leadership to support safe, efficient, and sustainable life-of-mine planning across the Montana PGM Operations. The role integrates rock mechanics expertise, numerical modelling, ground-support design, field observations, and technical assurance into long-range mine plans and major design decisions. Working closely with site engineering, geology, operations, and technical leadership, the position identifies and manages geotechnical risks, develops practical engineering solutions, establishes consistent standards, and supports optimization of mining methods, development layouts, stopping strategies, and ground-control systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering, or equivalent.
  • At least 6 years of mine engineering experience.
  • At least 4 years of engineering experience in the related technical specialization.
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously and within a team-based environment.
  • Experience providing accurate and coherent technical data to regulators and senior leadership.
  • Functional use of geotechnical and mining software, including the RocScience Suite, Deswik, and Map3D or equivalent software.
  • Experience with rockmass data collection, including core logging and scanline mapping.
  • Understanding of different mining methods that could be used for the ore body.
  • Ability to manage and successfully complete geotechnical projects that improve safety or efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with and oversee rock mechanics projects ranging from simple to complex and encompassing all facets of the operation.
  • Lead training for the onsite rock engineering group across sites and coordinate central personnel.
  • Be accountable for the technical function of rock engineering, including ground-support design and SOPs, rockmass data collection, complex engineering failure criteria, engineering calibration techniques, and performance reconciliation for stope and development design.
  • Manage rock engineering-specific regulatory requirements, including Ground Control SOPs and compliance.
  • Support and maintain related Technical Enablement Systems for rock engineering, including instrumented bolts.
  • Perform quality assurance and quality control of rock mechanics engineering duties, especially underground audits, required testing of support types, job observations, data collection, and critical infrastructure.
  • Support the Geotechnical Engineering Manager in establishing and maintaining rock engineering standards, processes, and procedures concerning rock engineering, related fixtures and support products, and planning parameters.
  • Support the Geotechnical Engineering Manager with numerical modelling as needed and provide field data to verify modelling assumptions for short- to long-term mining plans.
  • Conduct mining reconciliation to determine appropriate dilution factors by rock type domain, and verify contributing factors associated with stress redistribution, time studies, drill-and-blast parameters, and undercutting factors.
  • Review and organize tasks related to life-of-mine, five-year, and one-month mining plan reviews for all onsite Rock Mechanics team members.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
