About The Position

A Department of Transportation (DOT) driver, often referred to as a commercial vehicle driver, is responsible for safely operating large vehicles like trucks or buses, adhering to all state and federal transportation regulations, conducting pre-trip inspections, maintaining accurate logs, and transporting cargo or passengers across various routes, while prioritizing safety and compliance with DOT guidelines throughout their operations; typically requiring a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Requirements

Valid CDL with appropriate endorsements based on vehicle type.
Pass DOT-mandated medical examinations.
Maintain a clean driving record with minimal violations.
Pass a criminal background check.
Meet physical requirements for prolonged driving and lifting cargo.
Minimum of 23 years old to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) in interstate commerce.
Ability to read and speak English fluently.
Hazardous Materials Endorsement: Required if transporting hazardous materials.

Responsibilities

Operate vehicles in accordance with all traffic laws, maintaining safe speeds and following proper driving techniques.
Conduct thorough pre-shift inspections of the vehicle, checking for mechanical issues, fluid levels, lights, and tire pressure, documenting any defects.
Properly secure cargo using appropriate methods to prevent shifting or damage during transport.
Accurately record driving hours, rest stops, and other relevant information in accordance with DOT regulations.
Follow assigned routes, navigating efficiently using maps and GPS systems while adhering to delivery schedules.
Understand and comply with all DOT regulations regarding weight limits, hours of service, and driver qualifications.
Report any accidents, mechanical issues, or safety concerns promptly to dispatch.
Interact with customers professionally, loading and unloading cargo as required, and following delivery instructions.
Complete necessary documentation including bills of lading, delivery receipts, and inspection reports.
Conduct minor vehicle maintenance tasks like checking tire pressure and fluid levels.
Drive in various weather conditions and across different terrains.
