About The Position

The LOLO Gangman serves as a general support team member for First Coast Terminals and its customers. This position performs duties as dictated by operational requirements and is responsible for supporting vessel, warehouse, and terminal operations. The LOLO Gangman is responsible for maintaining good housekeeping and cleanliness throughout operational areas, stuffing and stripping flatracks and containers within safe shipping weight limits, maintaining and replacing emergency and lashing gear, assisting truck drivers with locating loads in the yard, and ensuring cargo is properly prepared for sea transport. This position is highly physical and requires the ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, perform strenuous labor, and effectively manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. The incumbent must understand terminal yard layouts, follow established safety procedures, work with a diverse group of individuals, and report to various supervisors as assigned.

Requirements

  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Ability to pass an annual DOT physical examination.
  • Certification and proficiency in operating forklifts up to 45,000 pounds.
  • Ability and willingness to qualify on forklifts, yard hustlers, and other support equipment utilized in daily operations.
  • Knowledge of terminal and yard operations.
  • Ability to safely and efficiently move oversized or awkward loads.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to interpret and work with complex alphanumeric codes.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively using radios and telephones.
  • Ability to issue instructions and follow up on assignments when necessary.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and during peak operating periods.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods.
  • Frequent stooping, kneeling, bending, and climbing.
  • Ability to run and jump as necessary.

  • Ability to safely handle cargo, equipment, and operational materials.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and dispatch loose cargo to ensure it is properly prepared and ready for sea transport.
  • Stuff and strip flatracks and containers as directed by the Foreman; pressure wash and clean designated reefers and containers.
  • Maintain inventory control of all emergency gear, lashing gear, dunnage, and pallets used for shipping operations.
  • Maintain inventory control of containers, flatracks, flatbeds, and other bulk loose cargo.
  • Maintain overall housekeeping and cleanliness of yard, loading, terminal, warehouse, and office areas.
  • Assist with locating cargo and configuring yard layouts; follow written plans and verbal instructions to support terminal operations.
  • Ensure all loose cargo received is made ready for sea prior to vessel loading.
  • Maintain and replace emergency gear, including but not limited to slings, hasps, shackles, gear stowage equipment, lashing straps, chains, and support tools.
  • Operate a pressure washer to clean refrigerated containers (reefers).
  • Assist truck drivers with locating loads within the terminal yard.
  • Lash and unlash cargo for shipment.
  • Participate in general housekeeping activities, including sweeping, collecting debris, and transporting trash.
  • Pre-stage equipment, cargo, and materials required to facilitate vessel, warehouse, and terminal operations.
  • Report to various supervisors and complete assigned tasks as directed.
  • Become qualified and maintain proficiency in forklifts, yard hustlers, and other support equipment used in daily operations.
  • Know and understand the terminal yard layout.
  • Follow all established safety procedures and operational requirements.
