The Facilities Specialist is responsible for maintenance, repair, upkeep, and management of Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) integration facilities supporting space technology programs. This role focuses on facility management for government spacecraft integration facilities, cleanrooms, laboratories, and mission operations infrastructure supporting missions ranging from CubeSats to ESPA-class satellites. The Facilities Specialist ensures compliance with safety regulations, manages facility systems, coordinates maintenance activities, and supports assembly, integration, and testing operations at government facilities. The ideal candidate will support: Integration facility management: Maintain and manage the Kirtland Spacecraft Integration facility and other government integration facilities including cleanrooms, laboratories, and assembly areas. Safety and regulatory compliance: Ensure compliance with Air Force, DoD, and OSHA safety regulations including hazardous materials management, waste management, and environmental safety. Facility systems maintenance: Perform maintenance and troubleshooting of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, security systems, and specialized laboratory equipment supporting spacecraft integration. Operations support: Coordinate facility support for spacecraft assembly, integration, testing, and flight operations activities. This position requires strong facilities management skills, knowledge of safety regulations, and the ability to work in Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities (SCIFs) supporting space technology experiments for the Department of Defense.

Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree
  • Junior: 0-3 years of experience in facilities maintenance
  • Journeyman: 3-10 years of experience in facilities maintenance
  • Secret, TS/SCI preferred
  • Knowledge of building systems, facility maintenance procedures, and preventive maintenance practices
  • Understanding of safety regulations including OSHA, Air Force Instructions, and DoD safety standards
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot facility systems
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple concurrent tasks
  • Effective communication skills for coordinating with vendors, contractors, and government personnel
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office and facility maintenance management software
  • Physical ability to perform facility inspections, lift equipment, and work in various facility environments
  • Understanding of hazardous materials handling and waste management principles
  • Ability to respond to facility emergencies and coordinate emergency response activities

  • Experience with facility accreditation processes for SCIFs or classified facilities
  • Familiarity with electrostatic discharge (ESD) control and cleanroom protocols
  • Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS)
  • Knowledge of crane operations and overhead lifting equipment
  • Experience coordinating with base civil engineering and facility support organizations
  • Understanding of Mission Operations Center facility requirements
  • Professional certifications such as Certified Facility Manager (CFM), Facilities Management Professional (FMP), or equivalent
  • OSHA 30-Hour General Industry certification
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification
  • Experience with government property management and inventory control
  • Knowledge of environmental compliance and sustainability programs

Responsibilities

  • Manage daily facility operations to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable support of business and program activities
  • Perform routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and basic repairs of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, lighting, security, and other building systems
  • Troubleshoot facility issues and coordinate contractors or vendors for complex repairs and upgrades
  • Maintain critical utilities, backup power systems, and specialized equipment as required
  • Coordinate facility access, badging, workspace setup, office moves, equipment relocation, and layout changes
  • Support laboratories, cleanrooms, operations centers, and other specialized work environments
  • Maintain facility readiness for surge operations or mission-critical activities
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, environmental regulations, Air Force/DoD requirements, and company safety policies
  • Conduct safety inspections and maintain emergency equipment, signage, and response procedures
  • Manage hazardous materials, chemical inventories, waste disposal, and recycling programs
  • Identify hazards and recommend corrective actions to leadership and stakeholders
  • Monitor inventory of maintenance supplies, tools, spare parts, and facility equipment
  • Coordinate procurement of maintenance materials, services, and facility-related support
  • Track maintenance activities, work orders, calibration schedules, and asset records
  • Maintain facility documentation including floor plans, procedures, reports, and inspection records
  • Work with internal teams, contractors, landlords, base support agencies, and external vendors to resolve facility needs
  • Communicate status updates, priorities, and recommendations to management
  • Support audits, inspections, and continuous process improvements
