About The Position

This is a grant-funded position scheduled for 17 hours a week for approximately one year. The role involves evaluating documents for scan readiness, handling fragile materials, operating an overhead book scanner, ensuring image quality, transcribing scanned logbooks, uploading files, tracking progress, and performing basic equipment maintenance.

Requirements

  • Proficiency with file management, spreadsheet and image software (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, IrfanView , Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Excel)
  • Strong attention to detail, ability to work independently, and meet productivity targets
  • Ability to handle repetitive tasks

Nice To Haves

  • Scanning experience preferred
  • Familiarity with archival handling and digitization best practices a plus

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate documents for scan readiness and flag any that require repair or protective enclosure
  • Safely handle potentially fragile materials in accordance with established preservation standards
  • Operate an overhead book scanner to digitize manuscript logbooks safely and accurately
  • Ensure consistent image quality and perform basic post-processing tasks (cropping, rotation, file naming, file moving)
  • Transcribe scanned logbooks using machine-assisted tools
  • Upload completed files to a digital access repository
  • Track daily scanning progress and update project logs and metadata as needed
  • Perform basic maintenance on scanning equipment and report issues promptly
