About The Position

The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) is seeking a Lodge Cook to join their team. This seasonal position involves living and working remotely in the 100 Mile Wilderness, preparing meals for guests at off-the-grid wilderness lodges. The role requires providing warm, well-rounded meals and hospitality, maintaining kitchen cleanliness to meet health codes, and implementing environmentally sound practices. The cook will also assist with meal services, interact with guests, and participate in lodge cleaning. This is an opportunity to be part of an organization dedicated to conservation, education, and recreation, offering a unique experience in an outdoor adventure setting.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years and older.
  • Enthusiasm for living communally.
  • Exceptional public service skills and a commitment to the mission of the Appalachian Mountain Club.
  • Exceptional customer service skills.
  • Must be a team player, detail oriented, well organized, highly flexible, adaptable, and resourceful.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand and/or walk for the duration of a 10-hour shift, including on uneven terrain.
  • Ability to safely navigate stairs on a regular basis.
  • Ability to operate kitchen and maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to travel safely in the backcountry in all weather conditions.
  • Must have appropriate winter clothing and gear.
  • Must have a criminal background record check performed annually.

Nice To Haves

  • Past experience in camp operations, hospitality and/or work in the outdoors is preferred.
  • Prior food service experience is preferred but not necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare all meals and snacks as scheduled and instructed according to pre-planned menus and established meal times.
  • Provide alternatives for guests with dietary restrictions.
  • Maintain a clean and organized kitchen, dry-storage, refrigerator, and freezers to meet Maine Health Codes and Standards.
  • Implement energy conservation and environmentally sound practices in daily operations.
  • Assist with the set-up, delivery, and clean-up of meal services.
  • Assist guests and visitors in a positive manner.
  • Respond to any problems or special requests with a professional demeanor.
  • Interact with guests regarding local information, lodge amenities, organizational efforts and programs.
  • Participate in deep cleaning of the lodge and other areas on a weekly/monthly basis or as instructed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
