About The Position

Locomotive Mechanic will work independently or in small team environments in the field repairing and servicing Cando’s fleet of locomotives. Cando provides specialized rail operating services. We provide a wide range of rail services including short line operations, industrial switching, material handling, terminal & transload services, and more. With over 50 operations, we are the 3 largest locomotive fleet in Canada and growing! Locomotive Mechanic will work independently or in small team environments in the field repairing and servicing Cando’s fleet of locomotives. The work may require travel away from the home for periods of time. Cando operates a fleet of primarily diesel-electric locomotives in our switching and short line railway operations. These industry proven locomotives use diesel powered prime movers and electrical generators to supply traction motors the force required to move rail equipment. Various control and safety systems use mechanical, relay and contactor electrical equipment, and pneumatic systems to control movements and operate equipment safely.

Requirements

• Ability to independently plan, organize, and prioritize workload.
• Understanding of materials purchasing, inventory management, and basic accounting practices
• Ability to lift/push/pull a minimum of fifty (50) pounds and to maneuver in/through/around equipment easily and safely.
• Ability to carry out production planning and meet Workplace Safety & Health requirements.
• General computer skills with ability to learn new processes.
• Hold and maintain safety critical medical status including clear drug and alcohol testing; valid driver’s license is required
• Ability to hold and maintain the safety and rail certifications required to access various sites
• Ability to work indoors/outdoors in all weather conditions with tolerance to fumes and odours
• Willingness to address emergency service problems at any time of day or night
• Minimum of five (5) years’ experience working in heavy industrial environments and with similar equipment

Nice To Haves

• Experience in locomotive electrical and mechanical repairs and maintenance is an asset
• Heavy Equipment Technician and/or Electrician with Red Seal certification is an asset

Responsibilities

• Regular inspection of locomotives, diagnose issues, make recommendations as to course of action and repair/recondition as needed.
• Performs all required preventative maintenance services on locomotives and other Cando equipment.
• Track all inspections and repair/maintenance work performed; complete all required logs.
• Establish daily and weekly schedules for locomotive maintenance and repair.
• Maintain and care for all work areas, vehicles, and tools used to perform the locomotive and equipment servicing.
• Provide quality customer relations, interface with Cando operations teams on site.
• Promotes and guides others to understand the daily requirements to effectively service and maintain locomotives.
