About The Position

The Locksmith position at the City of Tucson’s General Services Department installs, repairs, and maintains locks and security systems, ensuring the safety and security of city owned facilities. This position provides services to departments and employees throughout the city including key duplication, rekeying, badge access, and emergency lockouts. Work is performed under the supervision of the Carpentry Supervisor. This position does not supervise.

Requirements

  • Six (6) months post high school and two (2) years of directly related experience.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
  • Valid and unrestricted Arizona Class D Driver License

Responsibilities

  • Reviews assigned work orders daily, plans efficient driving route and gathers various required materials from lock shop to complete multiple work orders.
  • Addresses employee key or lock issues at lock shop counter by assigning badge access, new keys, and by replacing keys.
  • Documents and assigns keys to employees as requested by departments and ensures key return upon employee separation from the city.
  • Assigns keys temporarily to assigned personnel for scheduled projects and ensures return of keys daily.
  • Documents and assigns badge access to employees through computer programming system, ensuring the appropriate level of access, location and time are issued based on their position and work order request.
  • Creates, tests and documents unique pin patterns to build locks for assigned city locations as needed.
  • Creates and maintains original keys, documenting key patterns to create duplicate or replacement keys as needed.
  • Provides enhanced security without the need for lock replacement by rekeying existing locks to work with new keys.
  • Utilizes various electronic key machines to cut and program high security city vehicle keys.
  • Replaces blades and recalibrates key machines and repairs key making equipment as needed.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs door hardware, including door closures, windows, safes, and other security devices at various city managed locations and facilities, replacing parts as needed to maintain functionality and security.
  • Repairs and makes adjustments to door pressure, panic bars, closures, and hinges to ensure compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards and guidelines.
  • Programs keyless entry systems throughout the city including keypad locks, badge access systems and biometric locks.
  • Designs, builds, and implements master key systems in online security access program that provides multiple levels of access within a city building or property.
  • Wires, programs and installs keyless entry systems including keypad locks, badge access units, and biometric locks at assigned locations, ensuring compliance with ADA standards and guidelines.
  • Provides consultations to departments, trades, and project managers for security system installations, advising them on selecting appropriate locks and security solutions for their requirements.
  • Collaborates with other departments and trades on projects requiring badge access units, ensuring installations are completed in correct order and to ensure electrical cables reach the badge access unit for connection.
  • Receives and responds to emergency calls to provide lockout services to individuals locked out of City managed buildings or facilities.
  • Uses badge access, key duplicates, and other techniques as required to gain entry without causing damage.
  • Performs comprehensive safe services including installation, repair, opening of locked safes, combination changes, and conversion of mechanical dial locks to electronic keypad systems.
  • Tracks supply inventory and maintains locksmith shop, placing orders for supplies required to complete work orders.
  • Partners with external agencies to recycle old keys and hardware that are no longer used or that cannot be repaired.
  • Houses and assigns security accessories and parts for contracted security teams at various City locations.
  • Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned
