About The Position

Jefferson County is seeking a qualified Locksmith to join the General Services Department. This position installs, repairs, and maintains locks; makes keys; changes locks and safe combinations; and services safes. Additional duties include managing inventory and supplies, maintaining tools and equipment, and training and directing an apprentice as needed. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong technical skills, precision, and attention to detail. Work is performed in employer-owned facilities such as workshops, warehouses, or stations, as well as field locations including external businesses and construction sites. The role involves moderate physical exertion for prolonged periods, including carrying, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, crawling, or walking, and may occasionally require lifting items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Requirements

Valid driver's license.
Certified Facility Locksmith certification from the National Locksmith Institute.

Responsibilities

Initiates, plans, executes, and monitors work involved in completing projects.
Repairs and opens locks, makes keys, changes locks and safe combinations, and installs and repairs safes.
Maintains workspace and equipment and tracks locksmith-related jobs and performance.
Obtains and reviews work orders received by the supervisor to determine customer needs.
Trains others, such as new employees or apprentices, in locksmithing and safety practices and procedures.
Repairs and adjusts safes, vault doors, and vault components using tools and equipment such as hand tools, lathes, drill presses, welding apparatus, and acetylene cutting apparatus.
Calibrates locksmith equipment and machinery to maintain proper functioning.
Documents labor, including employee names and hours worked, and equipment used for each project.
Manages inventory and supplies and maintains tools and equipment.
Directs the work of an apprentice as needed.
