About The Position

Patch is seeking an AI-Assisted Local News Content Producer to identify, research, and publish 16-20 quick-turn local news stories daily for Patch sites in California. This role combines strong journalism fundamentals with modern AI tools to produce high-quality local news at scale. The ideal candidate will use AI as a productivity tool for drafting stories but must possess strong news judgment and editing skills to determine newsworthiness, verify information, craft compelling headlines, and ensure adherence to editorial standards. This position is suited for individuals who enjoy writing, closely follow local news, embrace new technology, and can work independently in a fast-paced digital environment.

Requirements

• Experience writing for digital media, student publications, local news organizations or similar outlets.
• Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills.
• Understanding of AP Style.
• Comfortable using AI and emerging technology as part of the editorial workflow.
• Strong news judgment and the ability to recognize compelling local stories.
• Creative thinker with the ability to generate story ideas independently.
• Comfortable working independently and managing deadlines.
• Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
• Familiarity with social media platforms as reporting and newsgathering tools.
• Technologically savvy with the ability to quickly learn new publishing tools and workflows.

Responsibilities

• Produce 16-20 local news stories per day across multiple Patch sites.
• Use AI tools to efficiently draft and develop accurate, engaging local news content.
• Identify newsworthy stories from government agencies, municipalities, businesses, schools, nonprofits, public meetings and community organizations.
• Monitor social media, local websites, newsletters and public records to discover original story ideas and community trends.
• Create compelling, SEO-friendly headlines.
• Verify facts and ensure all content meets Patch's editorial standards.
• Edit and proofread stories for AP Style, clarity, grammar and accuracy.
