About The Position

Performs responsible technical work in interpreting and enforcing the City’s local codes ordinances – minimum housing, public nuisance, junked/abandoned vehicles, and zoning ordinances; does related work as required. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required
  • Thorough understanding of local, state and federal safety regulations and OSHA
  • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License
  • Reasoning Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to work tasks and practical situations and requests made by supervisor or members of the general public; comprehend and respond to a variety of situations in an expedient manner. Must be able to make reasonable interpretation decisions
  • Good judgement is essential
  • Mathematics Ability Using arithmetic and/or Statistics: Ability to use arithmetic to calculate measurements
  • Language Ability The ability to speak, read and write the English Language are required for this position. Ability to read and understand local codes, manuals, instructions, directions, report information, site plans, use the internet and other documents relating to the job

Nice To Haves

  • Training and experience in code enforcement in the areas of construction, plumbing, electrical, mechanical or zoning is desirable.
  • Level I Certification or higher in building, plumbing, mechanical or electrical issued by NC State Code Qualifications Board; or Housing Code Certification issued by North Carolina Association of Housing Code Officials; or Certified Zoning Official Certification issued by North Carolina Association of Zoning Officials

Responsibilities

  • Interprets, enforces and educates the public on the City’s Local Codes Ordinances
  • Deals with the public by receiving complaints and furnishing information pertaining to local codes – minimum housing, public nuisance, junked vehicles and zoning ordinances
  • Engaging in speaking with the community through proactive code enforcement
  • Investigates citizen complaints regarding possible minimum housing, public nuisance, junked vehicle and zoning violations by performing field inspections
  • Inspects development for compliance with any zoning and/or conditional use permit regulations prior to issuance of Certificates of Occupancy
  • Conducts systematic inspections of minimum housing, public nuisance, junked vehicles and zoning violations
  • Issues required notices of violations in accordance with North Carolina General Statutes, High Point’s Code of Ordinances and Development Ordinance for minimum housing, public nuisance, junked vehicles and zoning ordinance
  • Takes necessary corrective action for securing voluntary compliance for local codes that are enforced by this division
  • Issues civil penalties for violations not corrected
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure effective enforcement of City Code regulations.
  • Maintain daily records of all activities performed in Accela database
  • Ensures that all work performed is in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies
