About The Position

The LLM and International Student Career Counselor provides career counseling and professional development training for graduate law students in the Washington College of Law’s LL.M., S.J.D, and Humphrey Fellowship Programs, as well as JD and graduate law students from outside of the US. This role advises non-US citizens on navigating JD job searches and counsels JD students interested in international legal practice. The position may also develop expertise in specific sectors or practice areas and coordinates with faculty, administrators, student groups, and other internal/external organizations. The counselor collaborates with a team of career counselors, employer relations professionals, and administrative staff.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor or equivalent (LLB).
  • 2 - 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in either legal practice or career counseling required.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and cross-cultural skills.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of international job search, career/employment services, recruiting, interviewing, and staffing principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of the global legal employment market and job search strategies.
  • Ability to assess individual needs, motivators, and differences in abilities and career interests.
  • Eagerness to support students and alumni from the US and around the world.
  • Eligible to work in the United States of America.

Nice To Haves

  • LLM Degree or Master’s Degree in International Education or related field.
  • 3 - 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in international legal practice preferred.
  • Prior experience in career counseling or working with international students preferred.
  • Fluency in a second language is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Counsel 150+ graduate law students enrolled in the LL.M, S.J.D., and Humphrey programs on all aspects of career planning and professional development, including self-assessment, resumes, cover letters, job search, interviewing, and networking.
  • Advise non-citizen JD and graduate law students on job search strategies inside and outside of the US, including helping them identify externships and Optional Practical Training positions.
  • Counsel JD students interested in pursuing roles in international legal practice, in the US and abroad.
  • Use career counseling and coaching techniques to support student success.
  • Develop and share deep knowledge of a range of legal career pathways, including in the public and private sectors in the US and worldwide.
  • Develop and facilitate job search skills, professional development workshops, and other educational programs and initiatives related to student and graduate employment.
  • Serve as liaison between WCL and AU’s International Student and Scholar Services.
  • Draft and edit student communications regarding job search skills and opportunities.
  • Analyze legal trends and develop employer networks.
  • Gather information about job and hiring trends and cultivate internship and employment opportunities.
  • Identify jobs suitable for LL.M. students and alumni.
  • Work with the OCPD’s recruiting team to create recruiting opportunities for WCL students.
  • Participate in professional organizations related to career counseling and legal employment.
  • Review publications to keep abreast of job market trends.
  • Assist the Assistant Dean and other team members with counseling, programming, outreach, and employer engagement as directed.
  • Complete projects to support the overall goals of the office.
