About The Position

The Literacy Specialist will work with elementary schools to foster literacy development and student confidence. This role involves building trusting relationships with students, families, school personnel, and community partners, while promoting equitable access to literacy support services. The specialist will implement evidence-based literacy instruction, deliver targeted interventions, administer assessments, and analyze data to inform instruction. They will also support MTSS and RTI processes, participate in quality improvement initiatives, and serve as a literacy resource for school staff. Collaboration with educators, administrators, and community partners is key, as is fostering culturally responsive and inclusive learning environments. The role requires maintaining accurate records, ensuring compliance with program requirements, and participating in professional development. Requirements

  • Must pass a criminal background check and TB test clearance.
  • Strong understanding of foundational literacy instruction.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse students, families, and school personnel.
  • Maintain confidentiality and demonstrate a high degree of integrity.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English with students and families.
  • Basic English reading proficiency to support students’ academic development and school-day alignment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with DIBELS and structured literacy approaches preferred.
  • Training or experience with UFLI Foundations preferred.
  • Education and Youth Development background preferred.
  • Experience working in schools and/or nonprofit settings preferred.
  • Familiarity with SELPQA or similar quality improvement frameworks preferred.
  • Valid California Driver’s License and insured vehicle preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Build trusting relationships with students, families, school personnel, and community partners.
  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment that promotes literacy development and student confidence.
  • Communicate regularly with stakeholders regarding student progress, program updates, and support strategies.
  • Respond professionally and promptly to stakeholder inquiries.
  • Promote equitable access to literacy support services and positive learning experiences.
  • Implement evidence-based literacy instruction using the UFLI Foundations curriculum and related structured literacy practices.
  • Deliver targeted small-group and individualized literacy interventions.
  • Administer DIBELS assessments at Beginning, Middle, and End of Year benchmark periods.
  • Analyze assessment data to inform instruction, intervention planning, and student support strategies.
  • Support MTSS and RTI processes by identifying students who require additional academic support.
  • Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) processes utilizing SELPQA and related program quality tools.
  • Engage in data meetings, reflection sessions, and action-planning processes to improve student outcomes.
  • Serve as a literacy resource for school staff and program teams.
  • Collaborate with coordinators and school partners to align literacy programming with school-site goals.
  • Collaborate effectively with educators, administrators, coordinators, families, and community partners.
  • Foster culturally responsive and inclusive learning environments that support diverse learners.
  • Demonstrate self-awareness by seeking feedback and responding constructively to challenges.
  • Maintain confidentiality and uphold high ethical and professional standards.
  • Support positive team culture through respectful communication, reliability, and accountability.
  • Maintain accurate attendance, assessment, and program records.
  • Ensure timely submission of required reports and documentation.
  • Monitor program implementation and support compliance with BACR and district requirements.
  • Participate in required meetings, trainings, workshops, and professional development activities.
  • Promote program visibility and support recruitment and engagement efforts.
  • Step into student supervision ratios when needed to support program operations.

Benefits

  • Pay rate: $24 per hour, based on regional grant funding and experience
  • Approximately 25 hours per week
  • Monday–Friday, approximately 1:00 PM–6:00 PM
  • Early September through late May (30-week contract). Additional weeks may be available depending on funding.
  • This is a part-time, non-benefited position
