About The Position

The literacy specialist's role is to support and guide teachers, teachers, and the school as they establish research-based literacy instruction and implement change in literacy instruction.

Requirements

  • Kentucky certificate, license, or other legal credentials required.
  • Minimum of Master's Degree with a Reading Specialist Endorsement or equivalent university training in early literacy.
  • Reading Recovery Trained or willing to be trained.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with curriculum development.
  • Assists with scope and sequence of program of study and plans for continuity to support literacy in the primary grades.
  • Helps set priorities for program implementation.
  • Examines, evaluates and recommends instructional methods, material and equipment, including technology.
  • Provide job embedded professional development through assignment in a host classroom(s) for literacy instruction.
  • Provide additional literacy PD for primary staff as needed for framework implementation (maximum 20 hours/year).
  • Model lessons for teachers related to literacy.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers in implementing the components of the literacy framework (planning, problem solving, reflection, etc.).
  • Facilitate the development and implementation of a school-wide literacy team.
  • Maintain bookroom/resources for use in guided reading groups and other literacy strategies.
  • Support on-going literacy assessment and analysis of data to guide instructional decisions.
  • Work with identified at-risk readers.
  • Train support staff in literacy strategies for at-risk readers.
  • Establish a trained literacy volunteer program for the school.
  • Build partnerships with parents (training etc.) to support literacy at home.
  • Demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships with students.
  • Demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships with staff.
  • Demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships with other administrators.
  • Demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships with parents/community.
  • Demonstrates punctuality and good attendance for all duties.
  • Participates in professional development activities to continually upgrade skills.
  • Adheres to school board policies and administrative procedures.
  • Adheres to the state Professional Code of Ethics.
  • Develops and implements KERA activities that are designed to carry out the goals of the school.
