About The Position

Needham Public Schools is seeking an energetic, skilled, and warm Literacy Specialist / Coach to join our team. This role is designed to support every child by providing student-centered support and coaching for classroom teachers to enhance their capacity to teach literacy to all learners. The literacy specialist will offer direct support in reading and writing to students and teachers, implement professional development, research, collect data, and assist teachers and principals in interpreting data to inform practice and make decisions regarding best practices, resource materials, and curriculum integration. The focus is exclusively on literacy development, including intervention and extension, and the position is designed to support, not replace, the instruction delivered by classroom teachers.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree, with specialization in reading instruction
  • DESE License as an elementary teacher and reading specialist
  • Holds a Massachusetts Teaching License as an elementary teacher and reading specialist
  • Holds an SEI endorsement, dual certification in ESL, or qualifies for such certification
  • Sophisticated knowledge of student literacy skill acquisition and development
  • Depth of knowledge regarding literacy (reading & writing) curriculum and instruction
  • Skill in administering and interpreting literacy assessments and using data to inform and differentiate literacy instruction
  • Demonstrated skill in teaching whole and small group reading instruction and providing consultation services to professionals
  • Strong interpersonal and written/oral communication skills enable information sharing and the development of collaborative relationships
  • Ability to collect, organize, and analyze data in order to make recommendations for instructional programming and professional development.
  • Working knowledge of Massachusetts ELA Common Core Frameworks

Responsibilities

  • Provide coaching to teachers by coordinating the implementation of the district literacy curriculum, providing demonstration lessons and co-teaching, acting as a coach for teachers regarding identified curriculum and instructional needs, training and supporting teachers in the delivery of assessments and interpretation of data, and participating as a member of school-based RTI/child support teams.
  • Extend and support district-wide literacy professional development by consulting with district and building administrators and teachers to identify individual school/classroom needs and provide professional development as appropriate.
  • Provide direct service to students by conducting diagnostic assessments of current/new students and offering short term/long term individual and small group literacy instruction.
  • Provide curriculum/instructional guidance to teaching assistants.
  • Collaborate with school principals to coordinate the organization, management, and assessment of school literacy programs.
  • Collaborate with the Special Education Department to provide assessment, differentiation/consultation, curriculum modification, and integration of special and regular education services.
  • Provide parent outreach by offering presentations, offering information/training on literacy development at home, and attending parent conferences, as requested.
  • Collaborate with the K-8 Literacy Coordinator and department members to enhance literacy learning of all students district-wide by participating in ongoing professional development, coordinating literacy data among schools across the district, and implementing the Common Core State Standards including curriculum integration of all disciplines.
  • Coordinate use of current materials related to literacy instruction and collaborate with teachers, principals, and the K-8 Literacy Coordinator in the ordering of supplies and assessment materials.

  • Salary is determined by education and experience, ranging from Bachelor’s (Step 1) $63,217 to Doctorate (Step 14) $133,922 (This range is based on a 1.0 FTE).
