The Class A Lineman Transmission is a skilled position in the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical transmission systems. This position works at various locations and may be required to travel to another state depending on customer demands. The role involves working safely on new construction, maintenance, or repair of energized and de-energized transmission systems. The position requires the ability to lead crew members in the absence of the Foreman, string overhead wire, set poles and anchors, and troubleshoot problems on transmission systems. A significant aspect of the role involves working with energized high voltage systems, requiring skill and care to ensure safety. The Lineman is responsible for maintaining company vehicles, equipment, and tools in good working order, and performing other related duties as required. The job necessitates working outdoors, often in inclement weather, and performing rigorous physical labor. Specific technical skills include identifying transmission primary and secondary voltages, understanding and reading blueprints, properly sagging wire, leading crew in structure assembly and erection, understanding dead ending and sagging operations, executing hot line work on conductor systems, operating a digger derrick, and performing bare hand work on energized lines. Proficiency in pole/tower climbing, heavy lifting and rigging, understanding induced voltage and grounding procedures, and working at heights and/or in confined spaces are also essential. The role requires the ability to properly install and remove PPE and cover-up, climb various structures, understand how to phase out a line using phasing sticks, identify puller and tensioner setups, plan safe work based on job prints, understand minimum approach distance, and perform basic bucket rescue/escape. Effective pre-job or tailgate briefings and performing reconductoring jobs safely are also key responsibilities.
