About The Position

The incumbent works on construction projects, usually working in a utility capacity, by transferring from one task to another where demands require workers with varied experience and ability to work without close supervision. Assists Apprentice and Journeyman Lineman in the maintenance and repair of both overhead and underground electrical distribution systems; operates a variety of specialized related equipment and vehicles.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months’ related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and can obtain a Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) if needed.
  • Regular Attendance- Punctual and regular attendance is an essential responsibility of each employee at the City of Siloam Springs. Employees are expected to report to work as scheduled, on time and prepared to start working. Employees also are expected to remain at work for their entire work schedule. Late arrival, early departure, or other absences from scheduled hours, that are not pre-approved or are excessive are disruptive and are to be avoided.

Responsibilities

  • Works under the close supervision of a Foreman, Line Crew.
  • Assists in the construction, reconstruction, maintaining and repairing of electrical systems: including substations, distribution systems, transformers, and power lines.
  • Assists in framing and repairing power poles and associated hardware, stringing wires, tapping wires, placing, and replacing insulators and setting transformers.
  • Digs holes for power poles and anchors, backfill and tamp power poles and anchors, set poles, string wires, load and unload material and equipment, frame poles, transformers, and equipment.
  • Keeps needed materials and tools accessible to lineman and assist in any way where qualified in the overall process of building and maintaining an electrical distribution system.
  • Operates a variety of equipment and trucks, and the use of attached equipment such as power diggers, winches, cranes, tamps and other equipment.
  • Installs and maintains underground or overhead power systems as required.
  • Keeps inventory, time and material records as assigned, stocks service vehicles as required.
  • Ensures equipment is in proper working order.
  • Makes public aware of hazards in existing work zones.
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
  • Will be required to have a share in the regular standby rotation.
  • Will be required to work after normal working hours in case of power outages.
  • Other duties may be assigned as needed.
