About The Position

Primary Reason Why Classification Exists: To perform semi-skilled to skilled work in the repair, maintenance, and installation of utility easements, water and sewer lines, and appurtenances. Distinguishing Features of the Class: An employee in this class performs routine manual labor in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water and sewer lines, meters, hydrants, easements, and other infrastructure facilities. Work is generally performed as part of a work team to maintain and repair utility easements. Work is performed under the direction of the Crew Leader and is evaluated by visual inspection of work, periodic meetings, compliance with safety procedures, and overall quantity and quality of work performed.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or equivalency.
  • 1-year of less experience in water distribution and/or wastewater collection system repair, maintenance and/or construction is required with some basic knowledge of equipment operations and safety.
  • Must be certified at the NC water distribution system operator grade C level or NC wastewater collection system operator grade I level or ability to obtain within 18-months of employment.
  • Must also possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) level A within 6 months of hire date.

Nice To Haves

  • Flagger Certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operates backhoe, mini-excavator and skid steer with bush hog attachment, dump truck (varying sizes), vibratory trench roller, vibratory foot tamp, chainsaws, weed-eaters, and various other types of equipment used in the repair and maintenance of distribution and collections systems and appurtenances.
  • Maintains daily work orders and reports.
  • Operates tapping machine to make water and sewer taps and service connections.
  • Installs water and sewer pipeline; repairs and replaces water and sewer lines and related appurtenances.
  • Installs water and sewer services including meters, cleanout, etc.
  • Operates the sewer rodder to unstop sewer lines; operates water jetter (Vactor operators).
  • Maintains reports for rights-of-way maintenance and for high-priority sewer creek crossings maintenance as required by the state.
  • Maintains water and sewer rights-of-way as required.
  • Installs hydrants, meters, valves, repair clamps and related pipeline apparatus; sets meter boxes; repairs and replaces fire hydrants.
  • Performs landscaping and surface restoration at job site.
  • Runs errands, picks up supplies and materials.
  • Performs other utilities and general services work as assigned.
  • Will be required to work outside normal work hours in an emergency or on-call basis.
  • Performs related tasks as required.
