About The Position

Delta Utilities is seeking a Line Locator to locate and mark underground gas distribution systems for contractors and others doing excavation work. This position can be filled as level I, II, or III based on experience.

Requirements

  • Requires a high school education or the equivalent knowledge of English, basic mathematics (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and calculation of fractions and/or percentages), grammar and punctuation.
  • Level I: Preferred minimum 1 year of line locator experience in any utility.
  • Level II: Preferred 3-5 years of line locator experience in any utility.
  • Level III: Preferred over 5 years of line locator experience in any utility.
  • Able to read and interpret distribution system maps, drawings, detail books and valve books.
  • Able to communicate clearly and effectively with customers and contractors.
  • Able to meet the operator’s qualification requirements for this position or become qualified within the time established by the company.
  • Able to provide a valid Driver’s License and a safe driving record as determined by the Company.
  • Able to demonstrate knowledge of terms and conditions related to locate requests and compliance with applicable laws and regulations, the Company’s Ethics and Compliance Code, and other Company policies and procedures.
  • Able to demonstrate respect for all individuals and adhere to the Company’s values and business practices.
  • Able to demonstrate the ability to correctly operate electronic location equipment and combustible gas instrument following a training period.
  • Able to meet all the physical demands of the job bending, walking, climbing on all types of ground and in all weather conditions.
  • Able to demonstrate, by test, and advanced knowledge of present job responsibilities as determined by the company at the end of 90 days.
  • Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Able to maintain high standards in the quality of locating work.
  • Able to communicate orally and in writing in a clear manner.
  • Able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a minimal amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Able to bend, stoop, squat and/or kneel for filing and must be able to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Must respond to emergency call-out for storm restorations and line locating emergencies.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned, within your scope of responsibilities.
  • The ability to comprehend, document, calculate, visualize and analyze are required.
  • Able to work daily in all types of weather conditions.
  • Able to wear and operate personal protective equipment, such as respirator, safety glasses, hardhat, gloves, protective footwear and earplugs daily.
  • Able to be included in random drug screen pool required for DOT drivers and DOT safety sensitive positions.
  • May be required to remain in the service area during emergency events and assume responsibilities assigned by the company to aide in restoration efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Locates and marks gas distribution system for contractors and others doing excavation work using appropriate locating equipment.
  • Drives vehicle to excavation sites; is responsible for related safety equipment and supplies in work activity.
  • Informs supervisor of construction projects in district and of damage or potential danger to the distribution system.
  • Operates laptop computer and locate ticket management software to complete locate tickets.
  • Performs other related tasks as apparent or assigned.
  • Ability to read and interpret gas utility maps and documentation.
  • Troubleshoots hard to locate underground gas structures.
  • Reviews and analyzes ticket volume and ticket work types for the day for local area.
  • Assist in gas damage investigations.
