About The Position

The purpose of this position is to deliver vital correctional, administrative, and clerical assistance within the Beaufort County Detention Center. Key responsibilities involve monitoring security and communications systems, ensuring precise documentation of facility and inmate records, assisting with inmate intake and booking procedures, and providing operational support for daily facility functions and inmate services.

Requirements

  • Requires High School Diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of one (1) year of college.
  • Requires successful completion of the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy within one (1) year of hire.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor Surveillance and Control Access by overseeing camera systems and video surveillance equipment.
  • Control facility door operations, ensuring they open and close properly, especially during emergencies.
  • Maintain detailed logs and records, including incident reports, population counts, and other facility activities.
  • Enter and update inmate data in the jail management system to support booking operations.
  • Conduct regular watch tours and facility security checks to ensure inmate safety and facility integrity.
  • Greet and assist members of the public, providing accurate information regarding court procedures and inmate services.
  • Perform routine clerical and administrative support tasks for booking and classification personnel.
  • Maintain continuous radio communication with correctional officers and contract staff to support operations and ensure facility safety.
  • Answer and direct incoming facility calls, providing assistance or routing as appropriate.
  • Screen all incoming visitors using a handheld scanner to detect and prevent the entry of contraband.
  • Perform inmate searches, including frisk, strip, and cell searches, in accordance with facility policy.
  • Distribute meals to inmates and escort medical staff during medication administration rounds.
  • Escort inmates as needed throughout the facility for movement to authorized locations.
  • Create and organize intake files for use by classification and intake staff for newly admitted inmates.
  • Update the intake/classification status board to reflect the current inmate population and classification changes.
  • Activate emergency protocols by notifying appropriate emergency response personnel during emergency code situations (as needed).
  • Performs related work as assigned.
