About The Position

ALULA Lighting Design, an award-winning specialty lighting design studio integrated within The HIDI Group, is seeking a talented Lighting Designer. The HIDI Group is an employee-owned multidisciplinary engineering consultancy with offices in Toronto, Ottawa, and Calgary. This role offers the blend of a boutique studio's creativity with the stability of a national firm. The team focuses on creating lighting solutions that enhance architecture and elevate the human experience across various project types including commercial, mixed-use, hospitality, healthcare, and institutional. The ideal candidate is passionate about design, enjoys collaboration with architects and engineers, and is eager to manage projects from concept to completion.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or above in Lighting Design or associated field (Architectural Engineering, Theatrical Lighting, Architecture, Interior Design, Electrical Engineering, or Industrial Design)
  • Enjoys collaborating in a team environment
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to think independently
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit
  • Proficiency in AGI32 or Dialux
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign)
  • 2 to 4 years of Lighting Design (or associated Lighting – related industry) experience

Nice To Haves

  • 3D modeling software such as Sketchup, Rhino
  • Participation in industry-related professional organizations (IALD, IES, etc.)
  • Certified Lighting Designer (CLD)
  • NCQLP Lighting Certification (LC)

Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with the ALULA lighting team and support senior lighting designers or project managers.
  • Produce concept presentations, lighting layouts, lighting calculations, and fixture specifications.
  • Perform contract administration tasks, including shop drawing reviews, site visits, and fixture aiming.
  • Provide internal lighting support for HIDI's electrical base building/tenancy department projects.
  • Communicate regular project status updates internally.
  • Assist in project organization and communication, including meeting minutes and managing project data.
  • Compile lighting design documentation such as presentations, CAD/Revit drawings, and luminaire schedules.
  • Perform lighting calculations using AGI32 for design verification, power density, and budget calculations.
  • Stay knowledgeable about lighting industry trends, luminaire research, and mock-ups.
  • Communicate with manufacturers, representatives, and clients.
  • Participate in on-site lighting surveys, meetings, mock-up sessions, or final fixture aiming/focusing.
