About The Position

We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for experienced lighting and cinematography professionals with expertise in scene illumination, cinematic lighting, color science, light physics, visual fidelity, relighting evaluation, and precise visual analysis. This role supports current and upcoming hybrid consulting opportunities focused on scene relighting evaluation, lighting and illumination standards, benchmark curation, visual quality assessment, reviewer rubric development, and high-quality project execution. Selected professionals will help define what strong lighting evaluation looks like, identify where current assessment methods miss key visual details, and shape the criteria used to review relit scene outputs.

Requirements

  • 7–10 years of professional experience in the film, visual effects, animation, or video game industry
  • Proven track record on 2 or more professional films or games
  • Specialization in at least one of the following areas: Lighting Technical Director, lighting, 3D lighting, look development, director of photography work, or cinematography
  • Meticulous eye for scene lighting, cinematic illumination, color relationships, mood, and visual continuity
  • Solid grasp of light physics, cinematic lighting fundamentals, color science, and how illumination behaves across a scene
  • Ability to translate complex visual details into clear, precise descriptive language
  • Ability to attend occasional onsite working sessions in Playa Vista, CA or New York, NY once or twice per month
  • Formal degree requirements may vary depending on project needs
  • Professional background in film, visual effects, animation, game lighting, cinematography, look development, or related visual fields is highly relevant
  • Industry credits, professional film or game work, lighting pipeline experience, cinematography experience, or visual evaluation experience may be especially valuable
  • Eligible professionals should be based in the United States and able to attend onsite sessions in Playa Vista, CA or New York, NY depending on project needs

  • Experience with lighting for film, VFX, animation, games, virtual production, or high-end visual content
  • Experience reviewing relighting outputs, look development, color pipelines, shadow behavior, material response, or scene continuity
  • Familiarity with tools or workflows used in lighting, 3D lighting, look development, compositing, color grading, or game environments
  • Strong ability to identify subtle visual losses that affect realism, mood, or cinematic quality
  • Comfort working with structured rubrics, visual benchmarks, and expert review templates

Responsibilities

  • Define clear criteria for when a scene's lighting and illumination have been captured well
  • Assess emotional resonance, physical fidelity, mood, contrast, color continuity, and scene-level lighting coherence
  • Identify where existing evaluation approaches miss important lighting or cinematography details
  • Translate nuanced visual observations into clear, precise evaluation language
  • Identify strong examples of lighting that is straightforward to evaluate and examples that are genuinely difficult
  • Curate benchmark materials that test lighting realism, cinematic mood, physical plausibility, color consistency, and scene continuity
  • Help pinpoint the most important visual losses that should be captured during evaluation
  • Review relit scenes for issues involving light direction, shadow behavior, exposure, color harmony, and material response
  • Help define reviewer profiles, expertise requirements, and scoring rubrics for lighting and cinematography evaluation
  • Collaborate with other subject-matter experts to keep evaluations consistent and accurate
  • Provide structured feedback that supports reviewer training, rubric refinement, and quality improvement
  • Create clear descriptive language that can be used in captions, templates, and evaluation materials
