About The Position

Performs construction, repair, and maintenance work on sewer and water lines; operates equipment and performs extensive manual labor; reads meters; performs related work as required. Works under the general supervision of the Street, Drainage & Sanitation Field Supervisor or on-site supervisor. This is a safety sensitive position.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Must be able to obtain Texas CDL-B within six (6) months from date of hire.
• A minimum of six (6) months experience in performing construction work requiring the use of equipment similar to or the same as assigned to this position.
• Knowledge of routine construction maintenance and repair methods used in water distribution/wastewater collection systems.
• Knowledge of applicable safety procedures and practices.
• Skill to communicate orally.
• Skill in performing work requiring strength and agility in all weather conditions.
• Skill in lifting heavy objects.
• Skill in preventative and minor maintenance repair on tools and equipment.
• Skill in operating the assigned equipment.
• Skill in using hand tools to perform manual labor tasks.
• Ability to follow oral directions.
• Ability to identify and correct potential safety hazards.
• Ability to manipulate things with the hands.
• Ability to coordinate hand and foot movements.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Ability to maintain physical activity over prolonged periods of time.
• Ability to lift, push, and load/unload heavy objects.
• Ability to regularly lift objects approximately 50-120 pounds.
• Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above required knowledge, skills, and abilities is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.

Responsibilities

• Operates a jackhammer, lawn mower, power saw, tapping machine, chain saw, hand tools, light trucks, assist with sewer cleaning machine, and operates a backhoe.
• Performs maintenance on meters and other components.
• Assists in installing and maintaining water and sewer lines; repairs wastewater main and manholes.
• Performs preventative maintenance on tools and equipment.
• Performs minor painting, plumbing, and maintenance.
• Cleans and stocks the truck.
• Loads and unloads various materials; performs yard clean-up and all other duties assigned.
• Performs after-hours standby duty and serves on rotation of duty phone.
• Assists other departments as required.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

• Works effectively with other employees to repair or replace water or sewer service lines, water or sewer mains.
• Makes water and sewer taps.
• Installs or repairs fire hydrants.
• Unstops sewer lines.
• Installs two-way clean-outs in sewer service lines.
• Takes water samples for bacteriological analysis.
• Sets up barricades when required to protect employees and the public.
• Performs routine maintenance on vehicles, tools, and equipment.
• Functions as crew chief in his/her absence.
• Sorts various materials.
• Reads, understands, and follows written and oral job instructions (English).
• Writes reports by hand.
• Uses good judgment to work safely and use equipment properly.
• Hears clearly when working around equipment or in street and alley traffic, using proper safety precautions.
• Serves on standby crew for after hours emergency work as required.
• Communicates effectively with the public and other city employees.
