About The Position

Under the general supervision of a Utility Maintenance Supervisor or designee, performs technical work of moderate difficulty in the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of the municipal water distribution and wastewater collection systems (mains and attendant devices). Work includes the connection of fittings; the installation, repair and cleaning of mains, lines, valves, and hydrants; the maintenance and repair of lift stations; the placement, removal, and minor repair to water meters; and the connection/disconnection of water service, including testing of water pressure. Incumbents utilize various trucks such as a TV truck, Jet Cleaning truck (JETVAC) and a Grout truck in order to take video of wastewater lines to check for cracked pipes and joint leaks, pressure clean sewer lines and manholes and grout wastewater lines to stop intrusion of storm water runoff. Duties may involve exposure to unsanitary waste and occasional adverse weather conditions. Work is reviewed through observation and written reports for adherence to established policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED; supplemented by six (6) months experience in the plumbing trade or water and wastewater repair; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Knowledge of the practices and materials utilized in the installation and maintenance of a water/wastewater utility system.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
  • Ability to locate leaks, stoppages and malfunctions in water and wastewater lines and related equipment.
  • Ability to operate heavy hand machinery used in the maintenance of water/wastewater lines.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees.
  • Skill in the use of hand tools, gas saw, tamper, jackhammers, and various power tools.

Responsibilities

  • Installs and services water and wastewater mains: caulks and cements fittings; places barricades; excavates trenches for main placement; applies temporary patches to street surface following repair.
  • Raises, lowers, and repairs valve boxes; installs water meters; connects and pressure tests fire hydrants; installs standpipes.
  • Conducts TV video inspection of sewer lines and pressure cleaning of sewer lines.
  • Assists in locating breaks in utility lines to effect repair.
  • Installs, repairs, and replaces water and wastewater lines and manholes.
  • Assists in the inspection and televising of sewer lines for defects.
  • Operates motor vehicles to transport personnel and supplies to work site; operates various hand and power tools; operate backhoes, boom-trucks, JETVACS, and other heavy equipment.
  • Answers in field customer complaints and inquiries.
  • Performs general grounds and non-skilled level facilities maintenance and cleaning.
  • Maintains and repairs lift station, pumps, and related equipment.
