About The Position

Hotchkiss Lifeguards provide supervision and work to ensure safety for all swimmers in our aquatic facility. Lifeguards support community open swim, and can be called upon to support other guarding needs at the Hotchkiss waterfront, if waterfront certified, or for additional event needs at the Hixon Pool. Lifeguards play an instrumental role in maintaining safety for swimmers in the pool, and around the pool deck. They must be informed about and possess the ability to follow all safety protocols. Patron safety is the primary responsibility.

Requirements

  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification.
  • Current First Aid and CPR/AED certified.
  • Minimum age of 16 to work for Hotchkiss as a Lifeguard.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.
  • If a Hotchkiss Student, passing status on required Student Swim Test.
  • Must pass deep water rescue training/testing confirmed by Hotchkiss for employment consideration.
  • Possess decisive and confident decision-making ability.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, proficient in interacting with people of various ages from diverse backgrounds.
  • Physically fit, strong and agile to perform rescue needs.
  • Patience and physical stamina are required.

Responsibilities

  • Be responsible for signing up for open guarding slots by athletic season.
  • Be proactive in your communications with your supervisor about your availability to provide pool coverage.
  • Be timely, report early to your work shifts to prepare, ensure that the pool is open on time.
  • Wear appropriate apparel, and issued uniform T-Shirt.
  • Ensure that all swimmers exit and enter the pool through appropriate locker rooms.
  • Ensure that all swimmers sign in and out and acknowledge swim test status.
  • Ensure that all swimmers are part of the immediate Hotchkiss community.
  • Explain and enforce rules, to ensure patron safety.
  • Monitor and warn patrons of unsafe situations or behaviors.
  • Respond to emergencies.
  • Perform first aid procedures and CPR if necessary.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the pool deck, recognizing any hazards, reporting them to the Mars Athletic Center Facility Manager or your supervisor.
  • Be familiar and practiced with the Emergency Action Plan located in the pool office.
  • Attend required in-service training three to four times per academic year.
  • Maintain physical fitness in order to perform required duties.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
