About The Position

Lifeguards are primarily responsible for preventing drownings and injuries from occurring. Lifeguards must be able to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies. The Lifeguard creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting and maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck and surrounding areas. In accordance with YMCA policies and procedures, lifeguards will ensure safe and quality program operations that promotes the five core values of the YMCA: caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith as well as upholds our service standards of welcoming, connecting, supporting, and inviting. Regardless of primary assignment, this position is expected to rotate between all YMCA pool locations.

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 15 years old required.
  • Certifications required upon hire: Basic Life Support, Basic First Aid, Emergency Use of Medical Oxygen, and YMCA Lifeguard (or ARC).
  • Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness.
  • Praesidium Academy trainings.
  • YMCA’s I Hear You: Service with CARE and Redwood’s The Professional Lifeguard e-learnings to be completed within 120 days.
  • Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.

Nice To Haves

  • If ARC certified, YMCA Lifeguard crossover course to be completed within 120 days.
  • Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations.
  • Proven track record of developing authentic and deepened relationships with others.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain constant, vigilant surveillance of the pool area with full focus and no distractions
  • Protect swimmers by identifying hazards quickly and responding proactively to safety concerns
  • Serve as a positive YMCA role model by demonstrating core values and service standards
  • Know and execute emergency procedures immediately using YMCA protocols and the Safe-in-Six model
  • Remain calm, professional, and decisive during emergencies or challenging situations
  • Apply all pool safety rules, policies, and guidelines consistently
  • Conduct pool area safety checks including water clarity, temperature, lighting, and deck hazards
  • Perform chemical testing when assigned and communicate concerns to leadership promptly
  • Complete accurate records and required reports for YMCA and health department standards
  • Inspect rescue and pool equipment, reporting shortages or maintenance needs quickly
  • Build positive relationships with members, participants, and fellow staff
  • Support pool and deck cleanliness when not actively guarding
  • Attend required trainings, meetings, and monthly skill practice to maintain readiness
  • Meet attendance, punctuality, and professionalism expectations
