About The Position

The position of Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the safety of swimmers by monitoring aquatic environments, preventing accidents through rule enforcement, and performing rescues and first aid. Requirements

  • Completed Secondary School.
  • Current National Lifeguard Service (NLS) Certification that is valid.
  • Current First Aid & Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certification
  • CPR and AED certificate.
  • Minimum of six (6) months of prior work experience as a lifeguard.
  • Knowledge of pool operations and current guarding techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of water chemistry, filtration and recreation facility maintenance.
  • Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and exercise good judgement.
  • Ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment.
  • Ability to react quickly, calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions.
  • Skill in the application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques.
  • Knowledge of CPR and emergency medical procedures.
  • Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures.
  • Ensure that all certifications are maintained as required.
  • Represent the organization in a positive, professional and engaging manner.
  • Must comply with all Salvation Army policies, procedures and associated legislation.
  • Exhibit good listening skills, have strong oral/written communication skills and respect authority.
  • Self-motivated/disciplined.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.

  • Provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
  • The screening is securedeither through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment
  • May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
  • Develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.

  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience working with seniors, children, and individuals with special needs is an asset.
  • Fluent French verbal and written communication skills are an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain constant surveillance of the participants in the facility; act immediately and appropriately to ensure everyone’s safety in the event of emergency.
  • Ensure pool equipment is in good condition including flutter boards, buoys, hooks etc.
  • Perform water rescues, administering CPR, utilizing AEDs, and providing first aid and documenting any incidents/accidents.
  • Enforce all aquatic facility policies, rules and regulations.
  • Responsible for pool closures when required.
  • When the pool is not in use will support other Village programs (Child Care, Adult Day Program, Respite)
  • Perform various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility.
  • Inspect the pool area and report any unsafe conditions or equipment to the Property Manager or designate.
  • Complete testing of water and adjust pool chemicals and remedies any infractions.
  • Prepare and maintain appropriate and necessary activity reports.
  • Ensure ratios are maintained for one lifeguard to number of people on the pool deck
  • Ability to prepare routine administration paperwork.
  • Attend any visits/inspections by the Middlesex London Public Health Inspectors.
  • Communicate non-compliance issues from Inspection Reports with the Property Manager or designate.
  • Report any identified needs to team members, Child Care Program Director/Property Manager or designate.
  • Perform other position related duties as required.
