About The Position

The League for People with Disabilities is seeking a dependable, safety-focused, and compassionate Part-Time/PRN Lifeguard to support the daily operations of the Wellness Center aquatic facility. The Lifeguard is responsible for maintaining a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and accessible aquatic environment for League participants, members, staff, visitors, and program guests. This position actively monitors pool activities, responds appropriately to emergencies, enforces established aquatic safety rules, performs rescues and emergency procedures when necessary, and helps ensure that all individuals can participate in aquatic activities with dignity and respect. The ideal candidate understands the importance of person-centered service, disability inclusion, accessibility, and participant choice and is comfortable working with individuals with varying physical, developmental, behavioral, sensory, and communication needs. The Lifeguard represents The League's commitment to helping individuals gain independence, increase self-sufficiency, and improve their quality of life through safe and meaningful recreational and wellness opportunities.

Requirements

  • Current Lifeguard Certification from a nationally recognized aquatic safety organization.
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid Certification as required by The League.
  • Ability to successfully complete The League's required onboarding, safety, emergency response, and compliance training.
  • Demonstrated ability to remain alert, calm, and professional in emergency situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals with varying communication and support needs.
  • Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a team.
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality are essential.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working with individuals with disabilities, in recreation, aquatics, healthcare, education, or human services is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain continuous and attentive surveillance of assigned aquatic areas.
  • Identify and respond promptly to unsafe conditions, distressed swimmers, emergencies, and potential hazards.
  • Enforce Wellness Center pool rules and safety procedures consistently and respectfully.
  • Maintain appropriate positioning and scanning techniques while on active lifeguard duty.
  • Prevent unsafe behavior before it develops into an emergency whenever possible.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe pool deck and surrounding aquatic areas.
  • Conduct and document routine safety checks as assigned.
  • Immediately report unsafe equipment, environmental hazards, maintenance concerns, or other safety issues.
  • Respond immediately and appropriately to aquatic emergencies, medical emergencies, injuries, and other incidents.
  • Perform water rescues and provide emergency assistance within the scope of current training and certification.
  • Administer first aid, CPR, and/or AED procedures as required and permitted by current certification and organizational policy.
  • Activate the Wellness Center's emergency response procedures when necessary.
  • Communicate clearly with emergency responders, supervisors, staff, and participants during an emergency.
  • Complete required incident, accident, rescue, or emergency documentation accurately and promptly.
  • Participate in emergency drills, safety exercises, and required competency reviews.
  • Provide respectful and professional assistance to individuals with disabilities while promoting independence and participant choice.
  • Recognize that participants may have different mobility, communication, sensory, behavioral, or support needs.
  • Follow established participant support plans, safety procedures, and reasonable accommodations applicable to aquatic activities.
  • Use appropriate communication techniques based on the individual's needs and preferences.
  • Maintain participant dignity and privacy during all interactions.
  • Avoid unnecessary physical assistance and encourage individuals to perform tasks independently whenever safely possible.
  • Coordinate with Wellness Center staff, program staff, caregivers, and other authorized personnel when additional support is needed.
  • Support an environment free from discrimination, harassment, intimidation, or exclusion.
  • Assist with opening and closing aquatic areas as assigned.
  • Complete pool safety and equipment inspections according to established procedures.
  • Monitor water and facility conditions and report concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Assist with maintaining appropriate pool capacity and participant-to-staff ratios.
  • Ensure required rescue equipment, first-aid supplies, and emergency equipment are accessible and ready for use.
  • Follow established procedures for pool access, locker rooms, equipment use, and facility safety.
  • Assist with maintaining appropriate cleanliness and organization of the aquatic environment.
  • Report damaged, missing, or malfunctioning equipment immediately.
  • Greet participants, members, families, staff, and visitors in a professional and welcoming manner.
  • Promote a positive, respectful, and inclusive Wellness Center environment.
  • Respond to questions and concerns appropriately and refer issues to the supervisor when necessary.
  • Support aquatic programs, classes, recreational activities, and special events as assigned.
  • Encourage safe participation while respecting individual abilities, goals, preferences, and choices.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with participants, families, visitors, and coworkers.
  • Communicate effectively with Wellness Center leadership and other League departments.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training, orientations, and required safety updates.
  • Provide accurate information regarding incidents, participant concerns, facility conditions, and safety matters.
  • Maintain confidentiality of participant, employee, and organizational information.
  • Work cooperatively with staff across programs to support participant safety and successful programming.
  • Support The League's commitment to person-centered services and meaningful community participation.
  • Promote participant independence whenever safely possible.
  • Respect individual preferences and choices.
  • Support meaningful participation rather than unnecessarily restricting participation because of disability.

  • Participate in required background screening and employment verification processes.
  • Follow all applicable workplace safety requirements.
