About The Position

The City of Bozeman is recruiting for Short Term Lifeguards for the summer season, from June 15th through the end of August, with some flexibility. The role involves ensuring patron safety at aquatic facilities and providing swimming instruction. The position requires a two-part interview process, including an oral interview and a swim test with specific skill evaluations. Lifeguard short-term workers are responsible for life-saving duties, enforcing pool rules, providing customer service, and maintaining a clean and safe facility.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 15 years old.
  • Thorough knowledge of swimming and lifeguarding techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of First Aid, CPR, and use of AED.
  • Thorough knowledge of stabilization of victims with spinal cord injuries and other life-threatening injuries.
  • Ability to properly perform rescues.
  • Ability to instruct individuals on pool and water safety.
  • Ability to accurately operate point-of-sale and pass registration computer program.
  • Ability to use tact and discretion in dealing with the general public.
  • Ability to enforce rules and regulations firmly and with tact.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions.
  • Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks.
  • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions.
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology.
  • Ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.

  • Must successfully complete two prerequisite swimming skills evaluations including a swim-tread-swim sequence and a timed surface dive rescue event.
  • Must obtain within 1 month of hire and maintain: Red Cross Lifeguarding with Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation/Automated External Defibrillator (CPR/AED) for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid certification.
  • Offers for employment are conditional upon satisfactory responses to appropriate post conditional offer process.

Nice To Haves

  • Aquatics/Lifeguarding experience is desired, but not required.
  • Some knowledge of, or ability to quickly learn, community and recreation programs.

Responsibilities

  • Performs life-saving and guarding duties, including assisting patrons in life-threatening situations.
  • Enforces pool rules and regulations for the efficient and safe operation of the aquatic facilities.
  • Provides active accident prevention and monitors patrons in the water.
  • Completes rescue accident and incident reports.
  • Provides customer service, including answering questions, accepting payment for passes, parties, lessons, and programs.
  • Answers phones and directs calls, and registers patrons for programs.
  • Maintains a clean and safe swimming facility, including cleaning locker rooms, lobby area, pool deck, and restrooms.
  • Ensures pool, equipment room, and pool deck are clear of potentially dangerous objects or situations.
  • Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees.
  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas.
  • Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.
  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities.
  • Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.

Benefits

  • All-Staff training will occur June 15-19. This training is required for all to attend.
  • Lifeguard Courses June 5-7 or June 11-13.
