About The Position

Roxbury Tenants of Harvard (RTH) is hiring Lifeguards (Lifeguard I-III) and Lead Lifeguards (Lifeguard IV) to ensure the safety and enjoyment of Boston's coastal community. RTH is committed to advancing health equity, improving outcomes, and promoting the wellbeing of residents, staff, and volunteers through engaging programs, activities, and safety initiatives. This role is part of an initiative led by Mayor Michelle Wu to create a family-friendly city where children can explore passions in a safe environment. The ideal candidate is passionate about swimming, helping others, and making a difference in an inner-city community.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age for Lifeguards and 21 years of age for Lead Lifeguards.
  • Certified through Labor Day in: Lifeguarding (Red Cross / YMCA / BSA), First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (Basic Life Support / Healthcare Provider).
  • Certification must include two-rescuer CPR and the use of an AED and BVM. 'Online only' courses are not acceptable; skills must be verified in person.
  • Lifeguard I: 0-3 years' experience.
  • Lifeguard II: 3-5 years' experience.
  • Lifeguard III: 5-7 years' experience.
  • Lead Lifeguard (Lifeguard IV): 7-10 years' aquatics experience.
  • Lead Lifeguard (Lifeguard IV): Possess supervisory experience on the pool deck of up to one-two years.
  • Lead Lifeguard (Lifeguard IV): Possess at least eight seasons (80 weeks) of full-time or equivalent part time lifeguarding experience.
  • Lead Lifeguard (Lifeguard IV): Possess certification in the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Management (certification obtained online).
  • Minimum experience working with children/youth required.
  • Current certifications in Lifeguard/Swim Instructor, Pro CPR, First Aid, and Oxygen, or willingness to obtain.
  • Must be able to swim 300 yards, retrieve a 10# brick from 9.5 feet, and tread water for 2 minutes using legs only.
  • Ability to work with youth and families from diverse backgrounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferably possess current certification as an American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor (for Lead Lifeguards).

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety and enjoyment of Boston's coastal community.
  • Teach classes and participate with members of the community.
  • Manage the lifeguard team in the absence of the Director of Aquatics/PE (for Lead Lifeguards).
  • Conduct themselves professionally (for Lead Lifeguards).
