About The Position

Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director or Head Lifeguard and consistent with the Christian mission of the YMCA, the lifeguard is responsible for the supervision of swimmers during recreational and fitness swims. This role involves administering First Aid, exercising control of swimmers, and maintaining all safety and sanitation procedures according to the policies of the Upper Palmetto Aquatics Department and State Swimming Pool Operations Codes. The Lifeguard will also assist the Aquatic Director with various branch activities such as special events and other activities that occur on various occasions.

Requirements

Must be at least 15 years old
Available Shifts Monday - Friday 5:15am-9am and 8am-noon
Must have a current nationally recognized Lifeguard Certifications to include: American Red Cross, YMCA, ILTP Ellis, Starguard, and Boy Scouts of American Lifeguarding Certification.
If not American Red Cross Lifeguard Certified, must complete the American Red Cross Lifeguard course in the first 120 days of employment.
Current certification in Professional CPR
Current certification in First Aid
Current certification in Bloodborne Pathogens
If you do not currently have O2 certification, must obtain within 30 days of hire or at first available training
Must present a professional, mature image, and have excellent interpersonal communication skills.
Must have a positive attitude and desire to achieve the mission of the Upper Palmetto YMCA.

Must be able to accomplish the following: Remaining alert, with no lapses of consciousness
Must be able to accomplish the following: Sit for extended periods including in an elevated chair

Must be able to accomplish the following: Hear noises and distress signals
Must be able to accomplish the following: Observe all assigned areas of the pool or water park
Must be able to accomplish the following: Perform all needed rescues, resuscitation and survival skills
Must be able to accomplish the following: Think in abstract, solve problems, make quick decisions
Must be able to accomplish the following: Have adequate memory skills
Must be able to accomplish the following: Act swiftly in an emergency

Responsibilities

Responsible for the safety of facility patrons
Maintains a constant surveillance of the pool area
Enforces all of the facility’s policies, rules and regulations
Responds to patron inquiries and concerns as well as provides branch information as needed
Inspects the aquatic facility on a daily schedule and reports unsafe conditions and equipment to supervisor.
Completes records and reports regarding patron attendance, water chemistry, and incidents and accidents
Maintains effective relationships with the members, participants and other staff
Participates in all staff meetings and in-service trainings
Conducts aquatic facility maintenance as assigned
Maintains a safe, clean, well-supervised pool area that welcomes participation
Team work is promoted and demonstrated
Communicates aquatics programs, rules and regulations
Other duties as needed
