About The Position

Under the direction of the Aquatics Director, Lifeguards are responsible for supervising the aquatics area to prevent accidents, assist swimmers, and respond to emergencies. The incumbent will create a safe, enjoyable, and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and satisfaction in accordance with the YMCA policies and procedures. The Lifeguard will oversee multiple activities including open swim, water exercise, swim lessons, and lap swimming.

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 15.
  • Certifications: Lifeguarding including CPR, First Aid, and AED for the Professional Rescuer or YMCA lifeguard certification.
  • Ability to concentrate for long periods of time.
  • Ability to recognize swimmers who may need assistance.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize, respond, and remedy unsafe/hazardous situations.
  • Ability to communicate with all ages and levels of swimmers.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of people.
  • Never been accused or convicted of any child abuse including sexual abuse

Responsibilities

  • Maintain constant surveillance of the pool area, know/review all emergency procedures and respond to emergency situations immediately.
  • Perform first aid when necessary and complete appropriate incident/accident reports.
  • Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pools and aquatic area.
  • Lifeguards must be able to perform arduous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue to the standards of lifeguard training.
  • Inspect pool area daily for availability of rescue equipment, hazardous or unsafe conditions and report conditions to supervisor or maintenance department immediately.
  • Keep aquatic facility clean, including picking up and putting away equipment as well as daily cleaning tasks.
  • Assist in readying the pool for programs to begin and end on time. This includes performing tasks such as moving lane lines or putting handicap-accessible steps into the pool or removing them from the pool.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Aquatics Director.
  • Follow all YMCA policy and procedures including Child Abuse Prevention.
