About The Position

Join the City of Newport Beach Fire Department - Lifeguard Operations Division as a part-time Lifeguard Trainee for a rewarding summer. Candidates must first apply for the Lifeguard Trainee position to become a seasonal ocean lifeguard. Lifeguard Trainees will attend classes at the Basic Lifeguard Academy (BLA) to learn skills and techniques in ocean rescue, emergency decision making, first responder medical treatment, and public assistance. Knowledge and skills gained may include lifesaving techniques, ocean surveillance, rescue recognition, surf entry, identification of hazardous ocean conditions, Emergency Medical Responder and CPR certifications, and customer service skills related to public safety and the beach environment.

Requirements

Must be at least 16 years of age by March 30, 2027.
Strong physical fitness, strength and stamina, especially endurance swimming.
Vision requirement is 20-40 correctable in an aquatic environment.
Valid and appropriate California driver's license and an acceptable driving record may be required.
Successfully complete a thorough background review, including being fingerprinted.
Complete each component of the competitive tryout (1,000 Meter Ocean Swim and 1,000 Meter Ocean Run-Swim-Run) to continue.
Achieve a minimum score of 70% on the Virtual Interview.

Successful completion of the Basic Lifeguard Academy (BLA) may lead to hiring as a Lifeguard I or Lifeguard Cadet based on performance and operational needs.

Responsibilities

Attend classes at the Basic Lifeguard Academy (BLA) to learn skills and techniques used in ocean rescue, emergency decision making, first responder medical treatment and public assistance.
Complete two tower orientations.
Respond to emergencies as a disaster service worker in the event of a disaster.
